2023 Sony Open Weather Forecast and Projections

jordan-spieth-800x480

We’re teeing off for the Sony Open this week. And while the weather in Hawaii looks great, there is an edge to be had.

As usual in my Golf weather forecasts, we’re focusing more on wind than rain. While rain can halt play if it’s heavy enough, it also helps to soften and slow the course, meaning it helps as much as it hurts. With wind there’s no helpful side, it’s all negative impact, and the impact can lead to dramatic differences in scoring. My goal is always to try and highlight the timeframe with the lightest winds, the time with the strongest winds, and to see if there’s a cumulative advantage for one wave over another. You can use then use this to your advantage making your picks on DFS sites and sportsbooks.

Sony Open Weather Report & Forecast

Round 1 Weather Projection – Thursday, January 12th

Windiest time frame Thursday is actually before sunrise, with winds gradually tapering off a bit from that point on. I expect about a 10-15mph wind early, down to 10mph for most of the afternoon.

Round 2 Weather Projection – Friday, January 13th

Wind lays down nicely for Day 2, just a 5mph wind through the morning, with 5-10 in the afternoon.

Round 3 Weather Projection – Saturday, January 14th

Looks very similar to the weather Friday, a light breeze at most, pretty perfect conditions.

Round 4 Weather Projection – Sunday, January 15th

Winds pick up a bit to close things out. Should see a 10mph wind early with 10-15mph by the afternoon.

Overall Sony Open Weather Forecast

As I mentioned in the intro, when it comes to finding a usable and predictable edge for PGA, wind matters a lot more than rain. In this case, neither day looks massively different wind-wise for one wave over another, but I do think that golfers who get a “Thurs PM / Fri AM” draw will likely get the better of the weather on both days. That being said, the difference isn’t dramatic, so I wouldn’t force anything when the weather edge is this slight. Stay tuned to @KevinRothWx for the latest.
