Connecticut enters play on Monday 2-0 on the young season after wins against Indiana and Washington at home. Tonight will be their first road test of 2024. Indiana is still searching for its first win this season, having lost each of their 3 games last week.

Connecticut Sun

Connecticut dominant start to 2024

Every early-season team summary comes with an important caveat that teams haven’t played many games, but Connecticut has looked very good so far to begin 2024. Through 2 games, the Sun rank 2nd in Net Rating, with efficient offense and tenacious defense on full display. One year after playing third fiddle to Las Vegas and New York, Connecticut looks like a team to take a little bit more seriously this time around.

Bonner making early-season impact

Perhaps most notable in Connecticut’s first 2 games has been the performance of DeWanna Bonner, who is averaging 21 points and 6 rebounds on 51.5% shooting. Even more impressive, Bonner has yet to make a 3-pointer in 9 attempts!

Bonner excelled last season with the Sun, averaging 17.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, but she shot only 42.5% from the field. If her early season bump in efficiency can be sustained, it will be a big boost for this offense.

Indiana Fever

Caitlin Clark, Fever still searching for first win

Caitlin Clark is leading Indiana in scoring and assists per game through the team’s first 3 games, but her performance to date in the WNBA has been less than stellar. Clark is averaging 17 points per game, but she’s shooting only 40% from the field, including 32.1% from 3-point territory. She’s also averaging a problematic 7 turnovers, which devalue her excellence as a passer.

Indiana will need a more efficient showing from Clark this evening if they hope to break into the win column for the first time in 2024.

Poor shot selection, turnovers hurting Indiana

Entering play on Monday, Indiana ranks 8th out of 12 teams in eFG%, 9th in TS%, and 10th in turnover%. As a result, no team in the WNBA is scoring fewer points per 100 possessions this season than the Fever.

In basketball, the recipe for good offense is good shot selection, good ball movement, and limiting turnovers. Through 3 games, Indiana has exhibited poor shot selection, poor ball movement, and they have turned the ball over a lot. This is an area to watch this evening.

Connecticut Sun vs. Indiana Fever Prediction

UNDER 164 (-110), DraftKings

Indiana’s game against New York on Saturday went over the 168.5 total but just barely – needing until the final minute of the game for a garbage-time bucket to get the job done. Notably, this was despite a 55-point 1st quarter and the Liberty shooting 15-for-32 from 3-point territory for the game.

When Connecticut and Indiana met last Tuesday, the final game total landed at 163 points. In that game, both teams shot 40% or better from beyond the arc and 48% or better from the field, in addition to 50 combined free throw attempts. If we see a slightly better effort on the defensive end from these two teams, the under should be in good shape.
