Tonight, the Tennessee Titans and the Los Angeles Rams will battle on Sunday Night Football at Sofi Stadium. Tennessee enters this primetime matchup on a four game winning streak, but could be in trouble without star running back Derrick Henry in this one. Los Angeles has only one loss on the season—a Week 4 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals. Oddsmakers are expecting a relatively easy win for the Rams, pricing Los Angeles as a touchdown favorite on the spread.
Let’s take a deeper look at the matchup to see where bettors can find value at sportsbooks in this contest.
Tennessee Titans (+7)
Since losing to the New York Jets at the beginning of October, the Titans have defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, and Indianapolis Colts, with two of those wins coming at home and two on the road. Yet their Week 9 matchup with the Rams will be their first contest this season without Derrick Henry leading the charge out of the backfield.
Fortunately for Tennessee, they still have an outstanding offensive line, featuring standouts such as Taylor Lewan, Rodger Saffold, Ben Jones, Dillon Radunz, and David Quessenberry. The Titans also have an extremely capable quarterback in Ryan Tannehill and two star receivers with Julio Jones and A.J. Brown as out-wide. Tannehill does not receive much media attention because he rarely has a big game, but he has quietly put together one of the best starts to the season of any quarterback in the NFL. Despite only throwing for 300 yards once, Tannehill ranks eighth in the league in passing yards and has the eighth best QBR of any signal caller. If there is one concern for him ahead of Sunday’s matchup against Los Angeles, it is that he has struggled somewhat when it comes to taking care of the football. The Rams have forced 11 interceptions this year in their eight games.
Still, the Titans should have a decent day offensively at Sofi Stadium. The real question marks surrounding this team continue to be on the defensive side of the ball. Tennessee has been mediocre in pass defense, allowing opposing quarterbacks to throw for 15 touchdowns and a 91.1 passer rating. The Titans have been similarly mediocre against the run, allowing 4.5 yards-per-carry and eight touchdowns on the ground. Considering that Indianapolis posted 31 points against this defense last week, there is real concern that this unit could give up 40 points in this one against one of the best offenses in the NFL.
Los Angeles Rams (-7)
Outside of an inexplicably horrible performance in Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals, the Rams have been the most consistent team in the league this fall. Los Angeles has scored 26 or more points in seven of their eight contests, including four games of 34 points or more. The defense has been stout as well, holding their opponents to 22 points or less in each of their four October matchups.
Matthew Stafford has been a perfect fit in Sean McVay’s offense this season. Stafford ranks second in the league in passing yards and passing touchdowns, and has the best QBR in the NFL. Stafford has also done a great job taking care of the football, tossing only four interceptions this year. He is undoubtedly helped by an incredibly strong offensive line that has no weaknesses from left to right. Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods are two sensational pass catchers for him to target on a weekly basis. Simply, this is one of the most dominant offenses in the game. This group should have plenty of scoring opportunities tonight against a beatable Tennessee defense.
Despite having some of the games’ most recognizable names on the defensive line, Los Angeles has been mediocre against the run this year, allowing 4.4 yards-per-carry. Fortunately for the Rams, they will not have to contend with Derrick Henry in this one, who will be out for the foreseeable future. If the Rams can get an early lead in this contest, the game script will favor them tremendously. Los Angeles has held opposing quarterbacks to only nine touchdowns against 11 interceptions this season. They have also held opposing signal callers to an 83.2 passer rating, which ranks fifth-best in the league.
Sunday Night Football Pick
The Rams are a legitimate Super Bowl contender with numerous elite players on both sides of the ball. The recent addition of Von Miller to the defense is only likely to make this group stronger. Tennessee was already a fringe contender prior to losing their best offensive player. The absence of Derrick Henry is going to be felt strongly in this one. Los Angeles is the far superior team in this one and playing at home. Bettors should trust them to cover a touchdown on the spread.
