This week’s edition of Monday Night Football will feature the Washington Commanders against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. Entering play, Washington is only 4-5, but they have won two of their three games with backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke under center. Philadelphia remains the only unbeaten team in the entire NFL at 8-0. Oddsmakers are expecting the Eagles to still be undefeated at the conclusion of tonight’s action, pricing Philadelphia as 11.5-point home favorites on the spread.

Let’s take a deeper look at the matchup to see where NFL bettors can find value at sportsbooks in this contest.

Washington Commanders

In three games since taking over for Carson Wentz, Heinicke has performed moderately-well, with a 5-to-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio and a 63.0% completion percentage. Yet, it is worth noting that these performances came against the Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, and Minnesota Vikings – none of which are particularly good pass defenses. Washington’s ground game has been little more than serviceable as well, ranking only 19th in Rush EPA/play since adding Brian Robinson Jr. to the mix in Week 5. If the Commanders are unable to establish a strong rushing attack tonight, it is unlikely that this group will be able to generate much offense.

Defensively, Washington ranks 13th in EPA/play through nine contests. The Commanders defense is composed of three stand-out performers, with Montez Sweat, Jonathan Allen, and Kamren Curl each offering elite production at their respective positions. However, Benjamin St-Juste and Kendall Fuller combine to form one of the least productive cornerback duos in the entire NFL. Facing one of the best offenses in the league in primetime, this unit could struggle.

Philadelphia Eagles

Prior to the beginning of the regular season, there were more than a few pundits who questioned whether or not Jalen Hurts was the future franchise quarterback of this team. Those concerns have largely evaporated after Hurts’ sensational start to the campaign, during which he ranks 6th in QBR – not to mention the fact that he has thrown a league-best two interceptions. Hurts is supported by an elite offensive line with no major weaknesses, in addition to top-tier talent at the wide receiver position. In a matchup against a mediocre Washington defense, Philadelphia’s offense should thrive once again.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Eagles have one glaring weakness – their inability to stop the run. Only the Cleveland Browns rank worse in Rush EPA/play defensively this fall. Nonetheless, the Commanders do not have an elite rushing attack, which makes it difficult to foresee this unit struggling much on Monday Night Football. If the Eagles can get ahead early, they should have little trouble forcing Washington into a pass-heavy game script, which is unlikely to yield much success against a Philadelphia secondary unit that has allowed the fewest opponent passing yards-per-attempt of any team in the NFL this year.

Commanders vs. Eagles – Picks & Predictions

Intra-division affairs have a tendency to breed competitive football games, even when there is a tremendous talent disparity between the two rosters. Still, the Eagles are undeniably the better team in this spot, with Philadelphia’s one major defensive weakness not likely to be an area that Washington’s offense will be able to exploit. The Eagles have not played since November 3rd, meaning that they have a significant preparation advantage in this matchup. Expect Philadelphia to jump out to an early lead – take them to cover the first quarter spread in this spot to avoid laying a large number on the full game.

PICK: Eagles -3 (-115, DraftKings)
