This week, Joe Cistaro breaks down PGA golf betting tips for the 2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Just ahead of the big game, the PGA TOUR makes its annual stop in Phoenix for the Waste Management Phoenix Open. TPC Scottsdale will host a raucous crowd — especially at the stadium hole — before fans shift gears for the football extravaganza on Sunday night. Scottie Scheffler will look for a three-peat as he is joined by several top-tier golfers. Review our WM Phoenix Open betting preview before taking a look at this week’s card.

2024 WM Phoenix Open: PGA Golf Betting Picks This Week

Unless mentioned otherwise, all Strokes Gained statistics will be referenced over the player’s previous 24 rounds on the PGA TOUR.

Hideki Matsuyama +4000 (bet365)

With Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland withdrawing from the event, the odds on Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas shrunk. The other top-tier options were squeezed as well, leaving me with a tricky decision. Should I hitch my wagon to one golfer this week?

I decided to place bets on a handful of mid-range golfers who have enough ball-striking talent or course history to hoist the trophy come Sunday. I won’t be shocked if one of the top five or six players on the board wins the event, but I would rather have a larger card. Hideki Matsuyama is where I want to begin because of his excellent course history.

Never missing a cut at this event, Hideki has two victories as well as other top finishes. Matsuyama should thrive at a course that places a larger emphasis on driving the golf ball as well as precise approach shots. With the importance of putting mitigated at this event, Hideki is as good a start as any despite his recent form.

We hope he comes alive this week at a familiar course and will consider him for a OAD pick.

Sahith Theegala +4000 (FanDuel)

Our second slot matches odds with Hideki Matsuyama. Sahith Theegala comes in at 40-1 at a venue that could just be fit for the budding superstar.

In 2022, Theegala made a run at his first victory on TOUR before a mishap at 17 on Sunday left him with a 3rd-place finish. The consensus, though, was that Theegala had the moxy to thrive in this type of environment. Theegala will get the crowd fired up before his tee shot on 16 and seems to feed off of the energy of the wild galleries on the weekend.

With regard to golf, his recent form is pretty good as well. He comes into this week ranked inside the top thirty in SG: OTT and SG: BS. He is 6th in BOB%, which will come in handy at an event that is likely to produce a winner at -15 or better.

Theegala will frequent this column throughout this season as we look at cash in on what could be a breakout season for the young star.

Corey Conners +6000 (bet365)

Our good old pal, Corey Conners, checks in as our third bet this week. Fitting the mold of a talented mid-range priced golfer with upside, Conners should fit TPC Scottsdale.

Conners’ form thus far has not been ideal. Yet, his starts in 2024 have come in tougher fields with big stakes. The WM Phoenix Open is a step down in field strength despite the incredible atmosphere the course will offer. TPC Scottsdale seems to be tailored to Conners’ strengths — drive it well, strike it well, and make some putts.

Conners has notably struggled on and around the greens throughout his career. The short game has held back what is otherwise one of the better ball-striking profiles on TOUR. The greens are so flat and so fast that putting should not be as important in Phoenix. If Conners can get his irons on track, he can go very low.

Despite his recent form, he still ranks inside the top 10 in SG: OTT and SG: BS. At 60-1, he feels like a good buy this week. I will also add Conners as a FRL on bet365 at +5000 for a 1/2 unit.

Adam Svensson +13000 (DraftKings)

Fellow Canadian Adam Svensson will take the last spot on our initial card. Svensson comes into this week looking to find his form. That said, the price tag is extremely tantalizing.

Svensson is an excellent ball-striker that can struggle on the greens. However, he can get scorching hot with the flatstick on occasion. When he won the RSM Classic, Svensson gained over 9 strokes putting. While he is cut from Conners’ cloth, Svensson’s ability to make everything will always offer the upside to win an event.

At an event that should emphasize ball-striking, Svensson could thrive and get a kickstart to his season. If he putts well, he could give us a true sweat at 130-1.
