The Houston Astros send Justin Verlander to the mound in hopes of winning their second World Series. The Nationals were once in the driver’s seat but the Astros roared back in Washington, winning three straight on the road after dropping the first two games of the series. In fact, it was the first time all season that the Astros had lost back to back games with Gerrit Cole and Justin Verlander on the mound.

Verlander now looks to do something he’s never done before: win a World Series game. Yes, you read that right. Justin Verlander, the three-time Cy Young Award winner, is winless in his six World Series starts. It’s the worst World Series record in MLB history. Verlander’s ERA is 5.73 in those starts. If he wants to get the monkey of his back then he’ll need to find a way to get through the first inning, something he hasn’t been able to do all October. Verlander’s postseason ERA in the 1st inning is 16.20 compared to 1.78 in all other innings.

The last time Verlander saw the mound was against none other than Stephen Strasburg himself. It was Strasburg’s fifth win in as many starts this postseason as he struck out seven and allowed two runs in six innings. In his 30 innings pitched this October, Strasburg is posting a 1.93 ERA while striking out 40 along the way. If Strasburg can get another win, it’ll be the first time in World Series history that road teams have won six consecutive games.

World Series Game 6 Betting Picks

I’m counting on Strasburg to do just that. The Astros are the superior ball club, but Strasburg +158 is a steal, especially the way he’s been pitching this postseason. Additionally, I’ll be betting on the Nationals +0.5 (-106) in the First 5 Innings. I like this bet for two reasons. 1) I can definitely see this game being tied after 5. This could turn into a pitching duel and, as the 7.5 run total suggests, runs could be scarce. 2) The Nationals bullpen leaves me uneasy against this Astros lineup.

My World Series Picks: Nationals +158; Nationals +0.5 1st 5 innings
