Week 4

In Week 4, we miss the Kansas City and Pittsburgh offenses (and defenses) on the main slate, and have a host of quarterback questions in their place. Two rookies make their first NFL starts, the 49ers turn to C.J. Beathard, and questions abound about how healthy the throwing arms of Marcus Mariota and Andrew Luck are. There are even people suggesting Josh Allen might be good and Tom Brady might be bad. What a week. Let’s get to the picks.

Exploitable Situations

Baker Mayfield @OAK

I might not highlight a quarterback in this space again all season, but I have to discuss Mayfield. After Deshaun Watson in 2017 and Patrick Mahomes this year, we have to be willing to consider a young QB can play at an elite level from the jump. One of the common threads between those two guys was a willingness to push the ball down the field, and modern offenses that accentuated that.

There’s obvious value in being on it early, as anyone who bought into Watson or Mahomes early knows. Mayfield is cheap, and there are enough other options that there’s a decent amount of skepticism. Carlos Hyde is a popular pivot in a setting where the Browns are road dogs in a game with a moderate total, and thus an unimpressive team total.
