Don’t Forget About Them There Youngsters

We all know that September 1st is a special day to us baseball purists, as the MLB season allows roster expansion to bring up talent from the minor leagues. Sometimes this talent includes extra-speedy types, good at swiping bases. Not only is September 1st important, but there are teams that are going to pull up players, mainly youngsters, at all points of the season due to injury, poor performance, etc.

September is the time I truly get excited about, though, as some teams will give their youngsters plenty of playing time to prove themselves, especially if they’re out of contention for a playoff spot. What does that mean for us? V-A-L-U-E.

Now, here are some value-youngsters (in my best Ving Rhames, as Melvin, from “Baby Boy” voice) to keep an eye on for 2016, including their professional (Majors and Minors) stolen base totals, with some of these youngsters possibly making the team out of Spring Training:

Tim Anderson, CHW, SS – 83 SB, but 49 in 2015.
Micah Johnson, LAD, 2B – 156 SB
Jose Peraza, CIN, 2B – 185 SB
Darnell Sweeney, PHI, 2B/OF – 122 SB
Mallex Smith, ATL, OF – 226 SB, with 88 SB in 2014! Wow.
Tony Kemp, HOU, 2B/OF – 93 SB
Roman Quinn, PHI, OF – 123 SB

There you go – some teaser speedsters for you.

It’s important for us to stay on top of the youngster movement, to know who is waiting for a chance to steal second base. Or third base. You get the point. Salaries will be reasonable at this time for the most part on these youngsters, especially the not-so-known ones. There’s nothing better than finding a GPP stolen-base-gem play, and one that most stay away from as they sucker themselves into a low ISO “power” guy.

Boom!
