Lesson 3: Who to Roster When a Player Is Ruled Out
Let’s use some real examples to illustrate how to go about attacking specific situations that are sure to arise throughout the course of an NBA season. Which players get bumps when their teammate is ruled out? We will use the 2016-2017 Cleveland Cavaliers for our first few examples.
Bump #1: The Player Behind the Player
What I mean by “the player behind the player” is the guy next on the depth chart. The NFL always likes to use the phrase “Next Man Up,” but that is applicable in the NBA as well. So let’s say that at shootaround at 10:00 AM on a gameday in the 2016-2017 season, Tyronn Lue announces that LeBron James will be out (rest) for that night’s game. Who should we play? Why should we play him?
