Delino DeShields Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Rangers have a 117 wRC+ vs LHP since the All Star break

Ross Detwiler has the lowest strikeout rate (14.4%) and highest HR/FB (31.8) on the board. As a result, his 7.33 FIP is more than a run and a half higher than the second worst pitcher tonight. He’s allowed 11% Barrels/BBE with a .386 xwOBA despite a 56.3 GB% that’s best on the board. Accepted wisdom for most the season has been that the Rangers are terrible vs LHP (91 wRC+, 26.1 K%). However, since the All Star break, their 117 wRC+ is ninth best in the majors against southpaws with just a 20.8 K%. The Rangers are expected to line up predominantly right-handed tonight and for good reason. Batters from that side of the plate own a .425 wOBA against Detwiler this year. Hunter Pence (150 wRC+, .326 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) and Danny Santana (114 wRC+, .255 ISO) are big reasons for Texas’s turn around against lefties. Delino DeShields (109 wRC+, .178 ISO) should be a FanDuel ($2.7K) bargain out of the leadoff spot. Both the Rangers and White Sox are tied at 5.25 implied runs, the fifth best mark on the board.

Rangers are an intriguing GPP stack vs. struggling Snell

Blake Snell started off the season incredibly well, but has really fallen apart over the past 30 days with an 11.94 ERA, 4.75 xFIP, 5.00 SIERA, and 10.8% K-BB. Over that time frame Snell has seen his dominant curveball collect a pitch value of -3.9; the pitch was worth a pitch value of 13.2 last year. His changeup has also gone downhill recently with a -3.9 value after it earned a 7.2 mark in 2018. Looking at his Statcast data, his curveball had a spin rate of 2517 RPM in 2018 and has averaged 2487 RPM so far in 2019, though over the past month that number has fallen to 2359. Snell’s offspeed pitches (curve, change, slider) over the past month have been ineffective as he’s allowed a .332 xwOBA when using them. He’s also given up a .358 xwOBA with his fastball over that time. Especially with Snell expected to see high ownership today, Rangers bats make for an interesting leverage stack with Snell clearly trying to regain his feel in the mound. Joey Gallo (.398 xwOBA vs. LHP), Asdrubal Cabrera (.331), Willie Calhoun (.329), Ronald Guzman (.324), Elvis Andrus (.312) and Danny Santana (.306) are all options if you’re looking to get contrarian. Delino Deshields (.276) has struggled vs. LHP this year but has a decent .310 career wOBA vs. LHP and will lead off at just $3.9k on Draftkings. Gallo has been their hottest bat with a .411 xwOBA over the past 2 weeks, followed by Danny Santana at .394.

Rangers in a nice spot at home vs. Indians’ Plutko

Adam Plutko has a 4.63 ERA / 5.20 xFIP and 4.91 SIERA with a 15.2% K-BB and 50.7% FB rate over 23 1/3 innings on the year. Plutko has done some things well this year, including just a 3.3% BB rate and 29.6% hard contact rate, but is ultimately a 5.21 ERA / 5.45 xFIP pitcher over 104 innings at the MLB level and projects as a roughly 5.50 ERA guy going forward according to projection systems. The Rangers are lacking some pop without Joey Gallo and Hunter Pence in the lineup but still have a decent amount of pop vs. right-handers even without them. Shin-Soo Choo (.386 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Logan Forsythe (.374), Nomar Mazara (.352), Elvis Andrus (.310), Delino Deshields (.304) and Rougned Odor (.289) are all solid options tonight in hitter-friendly Globe Life Park. Odor got off to a miserable start this year but has been a bit better recently with a .332 xwOBA over the past 2 weeks. With the exception of Andrus ($4.9k) and Choo ($5k) all Rangers bats can be had for $4.4k or less on Draftkings despite a healthy 5.34 implied total tonight.

Delino DeShields scratched Friday

Delino DeShields has been scratched from Friday's game against Baltimore with an headache. Carlos Tocci will take his place in the lineup and bat ninth.

Nice Value Option Hitting Second

I don't ever play Delino DeShields, but he makes a lot of sense tonight, and I'm more attacking the pitcher than the hitter in Texas tonight. Anderson has struggled with righties since coming back and was awful against them last season too. Since the start of 2017, he has a .371 wOBA with a .188 ISO and a 14.8% strikeout rate against right-handed hitters. DeShields has a .327 wOBA with a .133 ISO and a 23.6% strikeout rate. Nothing great here, but he's cheap and should hit second tonight. It's also extremely hot in Texas, and the Rangers have the highest implied total on the slate.

Game Theory

It's not a particularly fun strategy to deploy, nor are the Rangers a particularly fun team to deploy the strategy with, but on a slate with limited pitching options it does make sense to attack projected high owned pitchers in GPPs. Eduardo Rodriguez projects to be especially high owned on multi-starting pitching sites as the Red Sox host the Rangers at Fenway.

Rodriguez is good (3.75 SIERA, 24.9 K%) but he's not untouchable and righty Texas bats should see single digit ownership despite playing in a park favorable for right-handed power. This stack fails 8 out of 10 times but if it does hit you eliminate the 40% of the field that pitched Rodriguez along the way.

Affordable mini-stack against struggling pitcher brings some salary relief

Matt Boyd has allowed nine HRs this season, but at six of them over his last six starts and has allowed 14 runs over his last 13 innings. Right-handed batters have a .338 wOBA, 35.7 Hard% and 33.7 GB% against him since last season. It's not Texas, but Detroit is a good enough environment to give the Rangers a 4.42 implied run line that sits in the middle of the board. Three of the first four batters in the lineup are right-handed, do well against LHP and cost less than $4K each. Players looking to pay up for tonight's top pitcher might do well to consider a mini-stack like Delino DeShields (115 wRC+, .159 ISO vs LHP last calendar year), Elvis Andrus (110 wRC+, .177 ISO) and Adrian Beltre (174 wRC+, .200 ISO). Jurickson Profar (135 wRC+, .269 ISO) is a bit further down in the order (sixth), but costs less than $4K too.

Clayton Richard has been good against RHBs this year too, but does allow a lot of hard ground balls

The Rangers have a 4.91 implied run line against Clayton Richard that's almost entirely about the run environment in Texas. Richard has gone at least six innings in nine straight starts, over which he has a 15.3 K-BB% with a 64.4 GB%. Players can immediately eliminate LHBs (.286 wOBA, .242 xwOBA, 70.6 GB% since last season). The Rangers do not. They've scattered three across the first eight batters. Even RHBs have just a .254 wOBA against Richard over this span with a 15.5 K-BB% and 58.6 GB%. The one caveat here is the rate of hard contact allowed. RHBs still have a 40.9 Hard% over this span and all batters have an 89.4 mph aEV against him this year. This makes Richard difficult to roster in this environment and probably means players should at least have some exposure to Adrian Beltre (173 wRC+, .204 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) and Elvis Andrus (126 wRC+, .198 ISO) because hard ground balls can go for hits. Jurickson Profar (131 wRC+, .286 ISO) and Delino DeShields (115 wRC+, .178 ISO) may be options as well, but Richard is not an easy pitcher to run on.

Cheap Exposure to a High Total Game

Yesterday, the Rangers game put up 11 runs in the first few innings because of the heat and today it's expected to be around 95 degrees again. Most of the guys in the lineup are priced up again, but DeShields is batting second in the lineup and is only priced at 3.5K over on DK. on the year vs. LHP, Deshields owns a .377 wOBA and draws a matchup against Freeland who owns a .wOBA which is 50 points higher vs. righties than lefties. DeShields is probably a much better cash game play, but he does have SB upside and could end up with double digit points.

Chad Bettis gets a park upgrade, but not much of one, while the Rangers throw six LHBs at his reverse platoon split

The Rangers host the Rockies in what's the most positive run environment on the board tonight. Chad Bettis is not a terrible pitcher, but the park pushes the Rangers above five implied runs to the fourth spot on the board (5.17). Bettis is a reverse platoon pitcher (RHBs .363 wOBA, .341 xwOBA) with a league average ground ball rate against RHBs as well. The Texas answer to this is to swap lineup spots for Joey Gallo (123 wRC+, .320 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) and Rougned Odor (62 wRC+, .179 ISO) in the sixth and seventh spots. A normally balanced lineup will attack with just three RHBs tonight (four now with Isiah Kiner-Falefa replacing Mazara) and aside from Shin-Soo Choo (119 wRC+, .205 ISO), Adrian Beltre (123 wRC+, .195 ISO) and Delino DeShields (69 wRC+, .071 ISO) might be the bats to have exposure towards, covering three of the top four spots. Beltre has a 213 wRC+ and 63.6 Hard% over the last week.
