John Ryan Murphy Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
One lineup is suddenly deep with proficient bats against LHP with the return of another one of their hitters
The Arizona suddenly looks a bit deeper, especially against LHP with both A.J. Pollock (146 wRC+, .336 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) and Steven Souza (148 wRC+, .180 ISO) a part of it. They join prominent lefty-masher Paul Goldschmidt (195 wRC+, .405 ISO) in an intended assault on Eric Lauer, against whom LHBs have a .387 wOBA and 41.6 Hard%. While Nick Ahmed (130 wRC+, .241 ISO) and John Ryan Murphy (141 wRC+, .298 ISO) have great results against southpaws as well, the former does so with a .329 xwOBA (33 points below actual), but still has some value at a low price point. The latter finds himself batting eight tonight.
Lining Up Well in a Favorable Home Matchup
The Diamondbacks are finally starting to swing the bats a lot better these days, and they draw a fine home date with inconsistent young lefty Eric Lauer and the Padres this evening. Lauer has been particularly woeful against RHBs this year, allowing them to post a 41% hard contact rate, 33% line drive rate, and .387 wOBA.
Paul Goldschmidt is your top option here with his .373 ISO and .452 wOBA against lefties despite his awful start to the season, while A.J. Pollock is off the disabled list and also a strong play. If you are looking for value, Nick Ahmed should hit 2nd and carries a respectable .366 wOBA of his own against southpaws this season.
Arizona's matchup against Wei-Yin Chen may appear better on the surface than it actually is
Despite an offense with a 108 wRC+ and 15.6 HR/FB vs LHP, the Diamondbacks have just a 4.18 implied run line against a southpaw with a 15.6 K% and an ERA plus estimators all well over five. Statcast seems to think a bit better of Wei-Yin Chen (.332 xwOBA, 5.3% Barrels/BBE), who has averaged fewer than five innings through 11 starts and the negative run environment plays into that run line as well, but it's also just a few bats doing the damage against southpaws for the D'Backs. Paul Goldschmidt (189 wRC+, .405 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) will play well against the bullpen as well, but John Ryan Murphy (151 wRC+, .427 xwOBA, .325 ISO, 54.8 Hard%) probably loses his usefulness when Chen exits the game, as does Nick Ahmed (139 wRC+, .273 ISO), whose numbers are not supported by an xwOBA (.325) that's 49 points lower than his actual against southpaws over the last calendar year.
Can't Argue These Numbers
We’re still dealing with a small sample size on John Ryan Murphy, but it’s tough to argue with 52% hard hits, a .327 ISO and five homers in 52 AB against lefties. As was the case with Paul Goldschmidt, he is facing a low strikeout, high fly ball lefty with a history of home run problems to right-handed bats. Murphy is so cheap on FanDuel that I would consider him there as well, but he's a standout at the catcher position on DK.
A Difficult Stack to Stomach, But a Fantastic Matchup
I don't love stacking the Diamondbacks against left-handed pitching, as their lineup is abnormally lefty-heavy, especially with Jake Lamb back. However, I will make an exception tonight against Chen, who has arguably been one of the worst starters in baseball this season. His xFIP is approaching 6.00, his strikeouts are way down, and his walks are way up. I'll start with the obvious choice in a lefty masher in Paul Goldschmidt, who has picked up his play significantly of late. The reasonably-priced RHBs in the middle of the order like Ahmed and Murphy are also solid plays, while I don't mind taking a shot on some lefties despite a L/L matchup, as Chen has just been that bad this year.
A Fine Play for Salary Savings
If you are looking for value tonight, give John Ryan Murphy a look. He is very cheap and has quietly put up great numbers against LHP this year, to the tune of a .286 average, .403 wOBA, and .387 ISO. Assuming he draws the cleanup spot as usual against a southpaw, he’s a great play on all sites — even those where you don’t have to roster a catcher. He often gets overlooked, and while that won't be the case on a four game slate, he's still a great option in all formats.
Concentrated Chase
Saturday's main slate cash pool is going to be highly concentrated with Arizona Diamondbacks as they square off against one of the worst pitchers of the slate in Steven Matz. Despite a 3.53 ERA, Matz has struggled this year - he's already given up 11 HRs in just over 58 IP and 20.4% of the fly balls opponents hit against him go for HRs. Murphy has a solid offensive skill-set when he has the platoon advantage (105 wRC+, .187 ISO) and headlines a weak C position on DraftKings and has a nice price tag on FanDuel.
Jason Vargas has had poor surface results with competent underlying numbers
Jason Vargas has allowed two ERs or less in three of his last four starts. They are the only three starts he's completed five innings in this season and he's not gone more than that or 86 pitches in any start this year. This seems intentional. He has an 11.0 SwStr% this season and has been below 10.7% just once. His 85.1 mph aEV is second lowest on the board tonight. This doesn't sound like a pitcher players should be attacking in what now may be a neutral or negative run environment with the humidor (though it wasn't against Pittsburgh), but the Diamondbacks have a 4.73 implied run line that's tied for the board high with a confirmed lineup that has a combined .348 wOBA, .196 ISO and just a 21.7 K% against LHP this year according to PlateIQ. Vargas has attacked 60% of the time with sinkers and changeups this year and both pitches exceed a .350 xwOBA against, though neither exceeds an 85 mph aEV. Paul Goldschmidt has a .450 wOBA against sinkers and a .358 wOBA against changeups since 2016. Though David Peralta (.369) exceeds him against the changeup and this pitch mix may explain why Vargas actually has a reverse platoon since last season (,368 wOBA vs .327), though xwOBA brings either side within three points of .335. The other factor is that Goldschmidt (201 wRC+, .407 ISO), Nick Ahmed (142 wRC+, .274 ISO) and John Ryan Murphy (158 wRC+, .354 ISO) have absolutely smoked LHP over the last calendar year. They may not all make it a third opportunity against Vargas however and will face a Mets bullpen that is surely not daunting, but predominantly right-handed.
Hot Offense in a Good Matchup
The Diamondbacks are a viable stack tonight, although they aren't exactly flying under the radar. Everyone loves picking on Jason Vargas, as he has allowed a .376 xwOBA to lefties and a .344 xwOBA to righties this season. The Diamondbacks' offense has really been heating up over the last couple of weeks and get to face Vargas at home. John Ryan Murphy currently owns a .429 xwOBA against left-handed pitching.
Home Run Upside
With Jason Vargas taking the hill tonight, I like the right-handed hitters for the Diamondbacks. He has a .376 wOBA with a .196 ISO and a 35.9% hard hit rate against righties this season. Vargas relies on his 2-seam fastball and changeup for over 70% of his pitches against righties, and both of those pitches have allowed wOBAs over .400 this season. Murphy has 50 PAs against lefties this season, and he has a .354 ISO with a .405 wOBA with a 48.6% hard hit rate. He should hit fourth, and overall he's my favorite catcher on this slate.
