Justin Thomas Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Natural Winning Upside

Well, nobody is hurt by the venue change for this event more than Justin Thomas. He won two of the three editions played overseas and is the “defending champion” of this event. I’m not concerned about his ability to transition to a new venue. He’s a quick study on any golf course, and the lack of experience that most players have here should give Thomas a slight edge. He has had plenty of success during his career in no cut events, as well. Over the last 50 measured rounds, he leads this field in tee to green play and ranks second in strokes gained on approach. All of the favorites for this event are strong options, but I’ll happily side with Thomas.

Under The Radar At The Top?

It feels like Justin Thomas often gets over-looked in national media circles. Sure, he’s good, but Dustin Johnson has been dominant of late. Rory McIlroy just had a baby girl. Jon Rahm makes waves with his personality. Tiger Woods is Tiger Woods. You get the picture. Thomas just does his business and gets the job done more often than not. He ranked inside the top eight on the PGA Tour for the 2019-2020 season in strokes gained on approach, bogey avoidance, and par four scoring from 450+ yards. His game is a fantastic fit for Winged Foot provided that he is able to find an above average amount of fairways. If he does that, he will be in contention come Sunday.

Colonial welcomes back The PGA Tour with one of the strongest fields of the year

For the first time in quite a while, The Charles Schwab will have a field that would be the envy of any stop on tour. Unfortunately for golf fans in the North Texas area, this week's restart will be the first of a few events without fans. That being said this is still a great time for both the world of sport and more importantly for the game of golf. Sixteen of the top twenty players in the world will be in attendance this week leaving gamers a ton of variety as they approach roster builds. Justin Thoams will be one of the many players in this week's field playing Colonial Country Club for the first time. Thomas got to play nine holes on Tuesday and shared his thoughts on the event with the press after his practice. While this is his first time at the course, Thomas does have the advantage of having a caddie who has been on the bag of two different Colonial winners. Thomas will tee it up on Thursday in what should be a comfortable pairing with Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler. The return of golf will be a guessing game in terms of figuring out any type of strong edge or angle. Despite his lack of experience at this course, Thomas is a player with more than enough talent to be considered a strong top-end spend for the week. With a proven caddie on the bag, Thomas sounds ready to rely on a strong game plan to navigate Colonial this week.

Elite GPP Upside

Rory McIlroy is the favorite to win for obvious reasons, but this is one of those cases where rust might play a factor. Thomas has clearly kept his game sharp during the layoff, and he even showed his chops as an on-course broadcaster during the Woods/Mickelson/Manning/Brady match a few weeks ago. The lack of course history will likely influence ownership on Thomas this week, and this might be one of the only chances for us to grab him at 9-12% ownership for the rest of the year. He has clear winning upside and ranks inside the top 45 on Tour in ball striking and scrambling. He also ranks inside the top ten in strokes gained on approach. Leverage, here we come!

Justin Thomas looks to bounce back from a poor opening round at The Genesis Invitational

Even though there were a few low rounds on Thursday, Riviera Country Club held it's own by days end with a first-round scoring average of 71.41. Justin Thomas found himself on the wrong side of the scoring spectrum as he struggled to find form en route to an opening round of 74. If you are looking for a player to bounce back in round one then one would have to expect Thomas to have an improvement off Thursday's performance. From a glass half full perspective Thomas did manage three birdies in the five greens he hit on Thursday. Assuming a player of his caliber figures out a few things heading into Friday Thomas has the firepower to take it low on any course at any time. Playing from the outside of the cut line on Friday, Thomas will have to hit it better today if he has hopes of making it through to the weekend.

Ten Minutes to roster lock, no major news to report

There is no major news to report ahead of the final event of the season. The biggest decision of the week in terms of roster builds is what to do with Justin Thomas. Starting with a lead over the field, Thomas has one of the biggest price bumps for the week. As you finish up your lineup build for the week remember that you can leave way more money on the table than you are used to in a normal event. With only 30 players in the field, there will be a high chance of duplicate lineups. Good luck this week. ResultsDB will be up and running within 15 minutes of roster lock. Make sure to check out how your lineups stack up against the field.

Priced at a Premium for a Reason

Thomas will start the tournament with a two-shot lead and he’s coming off of a three-shot victory at the BMW Championship. Check out his approach numbers over his last five events — +7.7, +6.1, +5.2, +4.5, and +6.1. He finally got the putter going last week and like we’ve said over the last two months, as soon as that happens, he’s going to win. The downside with Thomas this week is that he’s by far the most expensive golfer in the field. There are enough cheap golfers to fit him rather easily, but you miss out on the mid-range options that feel underpriced. Thomas is very safe, as it would take a truly bad week for him to fall out of the top five and even a decent week could see him winning the $15 million paycheck. If he can get off to a hot start, he’ll be tough to catch.

Justin Thomas still searching for his form after returning from injury

Prior to injuring his wrist earlier this season, Justin Thomas was almost an automatic roster consideration in an event he entered. Despite an ailing wrist, Thomas posted a 12th place finish at The Masters leaving many to believe the injury was not overly severe. To the surprise of many Thomas pulled out of the PGA Championship due to that wrist and did not return until The Memorial. In his three starts since returning, Thomas is two for three in cuts made with a T20 at The RBC Canadian Open. Playing again this week after a missed cut at the U.S. Open Thomas is trending as one of the more popular golfers for the week. With undeniable talent, it's easy to see why many in the industry are willing to put continued faith behind Thomas, but with his high projected ownership, this could be a good spot to merit a fade in large field GPP's. Wrist injuries can take some time for a player to feel comfortable with in terms of both a mental and physical sense.

Great GPP Upside

Things get very interesting in a hurry this week, and Thomas is an intriguing case. He played terribly in pretty much every facet of his game a week ago, and rust was clearly there after he missed a few weeks due to injury. The fact that he was a late add to this field shows me that he is trying to get things figured out ahead of the U.S. Open, and this is a spot where I am interested in taking a shot on Thomas in GPP formats at low ownership. He was one of the most popular options in the field a week ago in his return, and those who got burned will be very nervous to go right back to the well. The talent and winning upside are there; it’s all a matter of shaking off the rust. I love the GPP leverage here.

Ten Minutes to roster lock, no major news to report

Ten minutes until roster lock and there is no major news to report. Kevin Na is the only withdrawal news of the week, so if for some reason he is still in your builds please remove him. Storms will be a factor today, but this does not point to a tee time draw basis for the week. Perhaps the biggest piece of news to digest is what to do with Justin Thomas. Just two weeks removed from an early exit at The PGA, Thomas is in this week's field and has a very affordable price tag on DraftKings. If he is 100% healthy and plays well he will be hard to fade at such a discount. Good luck this week. ResultsDB will be up and running within 15 minutes of roster lock. Make sure to check out how your lineups stack up against the field.
