Niko Goodrum Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Cheap Bats at Premium Positions

The Tigers are off to a scorching hot start in this abbreviated season ranking 3rd in MLB at 5.21 runs per game. They are led by Niko Goodrum and Jonathan Schoop at the top of the order. Miguel Cabrera still crushes left-handed pitching despite his advanced age and is dirt cheap across the DFS sites. Tonight they get a matchup against an average LHP in Gio Gonzalez. Since the start of 2019, Gio has a 4.67 XFIP and has allowed a .344 wOBA and .186 ISO to RH hitters.

Nike Goodrum has a 164 wRC+ vs LHP since last year

Gio Gonzalez has had one decent outing out of three and that one only lasted 3.2 innings against the Royals. The 7.9 K-BB% isn’t pretty, though he does have an 11 SwStr%. A 27.9 GB% is 19 points below his career rate. The .425 BABIP has a 39.5 LD% behind it. That’s not to say he’ll keep that up, but his .407 xwOBA is actually 29 points better than his real results. His 7.03 xERA is easily the worst mark on the board. The Tigers have hit LHP well (160 wRC+), but that’s a small sample. They also have the top team wRC+ in baseball over the last week (153) with a 26.7 HR/FB. They’re likely to be without their cleanup hitter, C.J. Cron, but the top third of the lineup still boats some accomplished RHBs against LHP. Add in Gonzalez’s .344 wOBA/.351 xwOBA against RHBs since last year and this is looking like a strong spot for Niko Goodrum (164 wRC+, .221 ISO vs LHP since 2019), who’s barreled 16.1% of his contact according to Statcast, for less than $3K out of the leadoff spot.

Uncomfortable GPP Stack

You might look at me oddly with me suggesting a Tigers stack tonight, but at least hear out the argument. Detroit has an implied team total of five full runs, which is VERY high for them. They get a matchup with a bad pitcher as well, and the price tags on the Detroit bats are affordable. If you are playing on a multi-pitcher site, you can stack up the Tigers with two stud arms. If you are playing on a single pitcher site, you can get a stud arm and some other elite bats around them. I almost never stack this team up, but I'll YOLO some GPP shares on this short slate, with Castro and Demeritte as my favorite values.

Detroit projected lineup has value and some upside vs. Jays’ Waguespack

Over 13.2 innings as both a starter and reliever with the Jays thus far, Waguespack has a 5.93 ERA, 4.15 xFIP and 4.04 SIERA with a 15.3% K-BB. In 52.2 innings in AAA this year, Waguespack had a 5.30 ERA with a 4.96 xFIP and 11.4% K-BB. Projection systems have Waguespack as a roughly 5 ERA pitcher going forward and is someone we can target. The Tigers certainly don’t have a good offense as they actually have a league-worst 74 wRC+ vs. RHP on the year. But the fact is they are incredibly cheap on both major sites this afternoon, especially on Draftkings where every one of their hitters besides Niko Goodrum will be available under $4k. Harold Castro (.328 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), JaCoby Jones (.327), Miguel Cabrera (.327), Nick Castellanos (.322), Christin Stewart (.317), Jeimer Candelario (.303) and Niko Goodrum (.297) are all options. Jordy Mercer (.347) actually has their highest xwOBA vs. RHP but is projected to bat last, tanking his value. Jacoby Jones ($3.6k on DK), Castro ($3.6k) and Miggy ($3k) are projected to bat 1-2-3 and are all great value options. Candelario ($3.7k) has been their hottest hitter since the break with a .360 xwOBA, followed by Castro with a .348 mark. The Tigers currently have a health 5.10 implied line vs. Waguespack and the Blue Jays.

Niko Goodrum (finger) scratched Wednesday; Brandon Dixon replaces

Goodrum has been scratched from the Detroit Tigers original confirmed lineup and will not start in Wednesday’s matchup against the Cleveland Indians due to an injured finger. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Brandon Dixon, who will now play first base and slot directly into Goodrum’s vacated seventh spot in the order. However, the remainder of the Tigers lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Mike Clevinger on the road this evening.

Savings Abound Here

The Tigers and Orioles are not two of the most exciting teams in the league, but playing in Baltimore with shaky starters backed by bad bullpens, this is a useful game to find some salary savers on both sides. Niko Goodrum leads off the action at a fair salary on all sites, with the switch hitting ability adding to his likeability. Against righties, he has hit 27% line drives this season which implies more upside is on the way.

Under-The-Radar Stack Should Have Platoon Advantage Tonight

The Tigers are unlikely to be a popular stack, with team’s offense ranking 27th in wOBA and 2nd in K%, but they may be worth a look if looking for a cheaper, under-the-radar play. Despite the team’s poor overall numbers, they are actually above average against left-handed pitching, ranking 12th in ISO and 10th in wOBA against lefties. I’ll be targeting the right-handed hitters near the top of the lineup such as Niko Goodrum, Nick Castellanos, Miguel Cabrera, and Ronny Rodriguez.

Niko Goodrum (illness) scratched Friday; Gordon Beckham replaces

Goodrum has been scratched from the Detroit Tigers original confirmed lineup and will not start in Friday’s matchup against the Oakland Athletics due to an illness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup Gordon Beckham, who will now play shortstop and slot directly into Goodrum’s vacated leadoff spot in the order. However, the remainder of the Tigers lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Frankie Montas at home this evening.

Targeting a Cheaper Stack With The Platoon Advantage

Detroit hasn’t been an offense to fear much this season ranking 29th in the league – just above the Marlins – in runs scored per game. They tend to fare better against left-handed pitchers, however, ranking 14th in OPS against lefties (.748) compared to 27th (.656) against right-handers. Tonight Detroit takes on a left-hander in Wade Miley who has allowed a .435 slugging percentage to right-handed hitters in his career (compared to .355 to lefties), and I’ll be targeting the Tigers’ right-handed hitters at the top of the lineup (Nick Castellanos, Josh Harrison, Miguel Cabrera, and Niko Goodrum) as a discount stack.

Tigers a Less-Popular Stack Option

The Tigers will face Brad Keller at home Sunday afternoon. Keller has a 5.14 xFIP and 5.47 SIERA on the year with a 3.9 K-BB% and just an 8% SwStr. For Keller’s career, he has been much more vulnerable vs. LHB with a .342 xwOBA allowed vs. just a .298 mark against RHB. Jeimer Candelario leads off for Detroit at just $3.6k on Draftkings, although he has just a 95 career wRC+, Keller’s soft tossing skill-set could pair well with Candelario’s swing and miss approach. Niko Goodrum is batting 4th and is another viable LHB, he is enjoying a breakout year with a .398 xwOBA. Although they will not have the platoon advantage, Nick Castellanos (.371 xwOBA vs. RHP since 2018) and Miguel Cabrera (.361) have shown the ability to mash RHP are are firmly in play with very affordable prices on both major sites. Harold Castro is a LHB that had a 137 wRC+ in AAA this year, he is another cheap option batting 6th for the Tigers this afternoon. Given the abundance of stack options on the slate today, Tiger hitters should come with pretty low ownership. The Tigers have a 4.46 implied line vs. Keller and the Royals Sunday.
