Taylor Motter Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Brendan Donovan scratched Tuesday; Taylor Motter will enter the lineup and bat 8th

Brendan Donovan scratched Tuesday; Taylor Motter will enter the lineup and bat 8th

Danny Valencia scratched Saturday; Taylor Motter replaces and will bat eighth

Valencia has officially been scratched from the Seattle Mariners lineup for tonight's game against the Houston Astros due to an unspecified reason. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Taylor Motter, who will take over the first base duties and bat eight. This lineup change will slide Jarrod Dyson up one spot to the seven-hole. However, the remainder of the Mariners previously confirmed batting order remains unchanged.

Taylor Motter replaces Danny Valencia in the Mariners lineup

Motter is replacing Valencia at first base and in the batting order. Valencia is dealing with a wrist issue that must have flared up this afternoon - it's still unclear whether it will cause him to miss any time beyond today.

Mariners look to capitalize on Dylan Covey’s rocky start

The rookie pitcher has allowed the highest Hard% (37.5%) and Hd-St% (18.0%) on the main slate to go along with an atrocious 7.98 ERA and 5.16 SIERA, which are also the worst among tonight’s starters. He also has a low 14.4% K% and 6.6% SwStr%. On top of all of that, he’s allowing 2.76 HR/9 and a 23.7% HR/FB rate. It’s safe to say Covey hasn’t been able to successfully adjust to the major league level. Things won’t get much easier tonight as he faces a Mariners team that’s posted the eight-best wOBA (.332) and fifth-best wRC+ (114) against RHP this season. Lefty Kyle Seager (.218 ISO, .376 wOBA, 41.0% Hard%) immediately jumps out as a top option, as does LHH Ben Gamel (.146 ISO, .339 wOBA, 34.9% Hard%). Both of these guys have a 42.9% FB%, which is important for this matchup as Covey has limited LHH to 30.6% FB% so far. He was a strong ground ball pitcher coming up through the minors, posting a GB% of 57.5% in all six stops, but five of them were a form of A ball and he ended up skipping AAA. In the majors, he’s demonstrated some reverse splits so far, allowing right-handed batters to produce a 41.8% fly ball rate along with a 30.4% HR/FB rate, 42.9% Hard%, and a .542 wOBA. Enter Nelson Cruz, who’s fared well against RHP this season with a .269 ISO, .405 wOBA, and 165 wRC+. He’s also posted a 44.1% FB%, 19.5% HR/FB, and 35.5% Hard%. Also of interest is Taylor Motter. Although he’s only had 94 plate appearances against RHP this year, he’s been mashing them for a .274 ISO, 43.1% FB%, 20.0% HR/FB, and 44.8% Hard%. Seattle currently has the highest projected run total on the main slate (4.77) and they’re certainly an interesting stack for this five-gamer tonight.

Danny Valencia scratched from Mariners lineup; Taylor Motter will replace him and bat sixth

Valencia has officially been scratched from the Seattle Mariners lineup for today's game against the Texas Rangers. However, a reason for the lineup change was not provided by the team at this time. Taylor Motter will replace him at first base and remain at the sixth spot in the order, effectively keeping the rest of the Mariners batting order intact.

Jordan Zimmermann has a 2.3% K-BB% versus LHB through three starts

Jordan Zimmermann has essentially extended his porous 2016 season into the start of the 2017 campaign, giving at least five earned runs in two of his three starts. The struggles of Zimmermann have gotten to the point that it brings into question whether he is still even an average Major League starting pitcher. His numbers certainly don't back up that sentiment, as he posted just a 14.7% strikeout rate last season and has dropped it to 13.7% through three starts while his walk rate has ballooned to 9.6%. This is not a good combination, especially if Zimmermann is unable to get the walks back in check. However, he allows so much contact, most of it hard thus far (43.6% HH%), that it's difficult to envision him shutting down this Seattle Mariners lineup even sans Kyle Seager. As expected, Zimmermann does do a much better job of limiting hard contact to right-handed batters, but lefties have been pummeling him this season to the tune of a 51.4% hard hit rate. This should obviously normalize a bit over time, but Robinson Cano (155 wRC+, .394 wOBA, .265 ISO vs RHP since 2016) still finds himself in an excellent matchup Tuesday night. Unfortunately, with Seager out of the lineup, there are no other lefties in the Mariners that particularly stand out, though Mitch Haniger (201 wRC+, .442 wOBA, .246 ISO vs RHP), Nelson Cruz (135 wRC+, .365 wOBA, .224 ISO vs RHP since 2016), and Taylor Motter are all intriguing tournament options as part of a stack or even as contrarian one-offs.

Seth Smith & Kevin Pillar are low cost leadoff options on Tuesday night

While usually looking to cut off bargains at $3K on DK & $2.5K on FD, there aren't many tonight, but there are a few player just above those marks today that are difficult to ignore. Mike Moustakas ($3.2K DK) should be a top 3B play with a 134 wRC+ and .302 ISO vs RHP since the beginning of last season (injury shortened). His opponent, Matt Cain has allowed a .400 wOBA to LHBs since 2015. Taylor Motter (also $3.2K on DK) is facing a LHP (Wei-Yin Chen .345 wOBA vs RHBs since 2015) and has a 311 wRC+ over the last week. Michael Conforto ($2.7K on FD) is leading off against a contact prone RHP (Zach Eflin .388 wOBA vs LHBs) and has a .245 career ISO against RHP. Austin Romine (317 wRC+ last seven days) bumps up a spot to seventh against Miguel Gonzalez and costs just $2.6K on DraftKings, a position players may need to punt tonight. Kevin Pillar (89 wRC+, .135 ISO vs LHP since 2016) leads off against Boston spot starter Brian Johnson and costs just $2.4K on FanDuel, where Manny Pina (281 wRC+ last seven days) might be your punt catcher, batting sixth against Brett Anderson for $2.3K. Seth Smith ($2.6K) is probably going to be incredibly popular leading off against Bronson Arroyo. Michael Saunders (101 wRC+, .191 ISO vs RHP since 2016) bats fifth against Zack Wheeler for $2.3K. Unlike previous days, there's just one near minimum leadoff hitter tonight and that's Jaff Decker ($2.1K DK/$2.3K FD), but he's going up against Yu Darvish.

A pair of first basemen and a pair of catchers are among the week's hottest hitters

A list of the hottest hitters over the previous week is topped by several first basemen followed by a couple of catchers. The hottest hitter over the last week (Trey Mancini) is, unfortunately, riding the pine tonight, but there are still a couple 1B bats expected to play tonight with red hot bats. Eric Thames (370 wRC+, 47.6 Hard%) homered again last night, but is facing a pitcher who grounds LHBs 69.5% since 2015. Freddie Freeman (333 wRC+, 69.2 Hard%) faces Max Scherzer (.302 wOBA vs RHP since 2015), but this is a pitcher known to allow a HR or two. Austin Romine (317 wRC+) and Travis D'arnaud (310 wRC+) both hit at the bottom of the order, but both are affordable catchers facing contact prone fly ball pitchers. Taylor Motter (311 wRC+, 56.3 Hard%) is the other bat projected to be in the lineup with a wRC+ above 300 over the last week. He faces Wei-Yin Chen (345 wOBA vs RHBs since 2015).

Nelson Cruz and Taylor Motter both have a wRC+ above 180 against LHP

A pair of Mariners top the board when considering batters with the highest wRC+ against the handedness of opposing pitcher tonight since 2015 (min. 30 PAs). Considering the Mariners are facing the left-handed Wei-Yin Chen (.345 wOBA, 32.8 Hard% vs RHBs over the same period), Nelson Cruz (186 wRC+, .335 ISO) is the expected name at the top and likely to be a very popular bat tonight. The next batter barely qualifies (32 career PAs vs LHP), but the red hot (311 wRC+, .56.3 Hard%) Taylor Motter has smoked LHP (183 wRC+, .192 ISO, 45 Hard%) and could be an under-the radar, affordable SS option tonight, even if we need to be strongly skeptical of the early returns. Mike Trout (171 wRC+, .267 ISO vs RHP) is in the top five no matter who he's facing and tonight it's the struggling Joe Musgrove (.325 wOBA vs RHBs), who recently admitted to dealing with mechanical issues. Joey Votto (166 wRC+, .244 ISO vs RHP) has struggled to start the season and will now be facing Kevin Gausman, a pitcher with reverse splits, instead of Ubaldo Jimenez. Bryce Harper (164 wRC+, .277 ISO vs RHP) closes out the top five. Mike Foltynewicz has struggled greatly against LHBs (.361 wOBA).

Andrew Toles is one of several low cost bats batting leadoff tonight

Players are looking for cheap bats if paying up for pitching tonight and there's no better place to start than with the Dodgers against Zack Greinke. Greinke rebounded with solid results in his second start, but the stuff still doesn't appear to be there as the velocity remains down and he's allowed hard contact on more than 40% of batted balls. Andrew Toles (135 wRC+, .198 ISO career vs RHP) leads off and costs $2.7K on DK/$2.4K on FD. Corey Seager (149 wRC+, .236 ISO career vs RHP) doesn't fit the normal criteria here, but does cost less than $3K on FanDuel. Kevin Pillar has been a below average hitter with little power against LHP in his career and we can say the same for Guillermo Heredia, but both cost the minimum out of the leadoff spot on FanDuel against a weak LHP (Miley, Perez) tonight. Brandon Guyer (152 wRC+, .192 ISO vs LHP since 2015) joins them at $2K, batting third for Cleveland. Gorkys Hernandez is also a below average hitter in what could be a difficult matchup against Tyler Anderson, but would also be a low priced leadoff hitter if here in the confirmed lineup for San Francisco tonight. Although lower in the lineup, the Mariners offer two more viable punt plays on the merit of matchup tonight with Taylor Motter (261 wRC+, .60 Hard% last seven days - $3.3K DK/$2.7K FD) at SS and Mike Zunino (131 wRC+, .238 ISO vs LHP since last season - $3K DK/$2.1K FD) behind the plate.
