Tony Finau Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

News and notes ahead of The BMW Championshp

Good Morning Grinders!!! With less than 15 minutes until roster lock, there is no major news to report. Tony Finau leads a field of 69 golfers chasing the covenanted title of FedEx champion. Check back shortly after roster lock to see how your lineups stack in ResultsDB.

Tony Finau and Dustin Johnson are both out this week

News broke this afternoon that both Tony Finau and Dustin Johnson are out of this week's CJ Cup due to COVID-19. Finau tested positive last week but has not yet cleared the testing protocol in order to return. DJ tested positive today and will miss this week. Robby Shelton and J.T. Poston are now both into this week's field.

Tony Finau is no longer in the field

Tony Finau has tested positive for Covid-19 and has withdrawn from this weeks Shriners Open. He will be replaced in the field by Bronson Burgoon.

Form? Check. Course Fit? Check. Course History? Check.

This might be a mistake on my part, but I have a fairly simple rule when it comes to Finau -- I play him on bentgrass and poa courses and avoid him on bermuda courses. I also like to play him in stacked fields. We get the best of both worlds this week, as these greens are a mix of bent and poa and we obviously have another elite field. Finau will be able to use his driver a bit more this week, which is always a positive for him. His irons have been a little off in the first two events back from the break, but I like his chances to bounce back at a course where he has three top 25 finishes. In this field, he's ranked seventh in greens in regulation and in the top 35 of every other key statistic that I'm looking at this week.

Bomber that Plays Well on Technical Tracks and in Strong Fields

Finau isn't a golfer that I was expecting to make my list of core plays heading into this week. He's a bomber off the tee and one that we typically target on driver-heavy golf courses. However, he's shown an ability to play well on these technical tracks over the years, very similar to Gary Woodland. When you take driver out of their hands, they hit more fairways and can rely on their precision iron play. In this field, Finau is ranked 12th in strokes gained approach, sixth in greens in regulation, and sixth in strokes gained around the green. He tends to play his best in strong fields and this week's rivals that of a major or a FedExCup event. He's not known as a great putter, but has actually gained strokes putting on bentgrass over the course of his career. The cherry on top is that he's played here four times in the last five years, posting finishes of solo second (2019), T29 (2017), T34 (2016), and T19 (2015).

Tony Finau looks to solve the mystery of TPC Scottsdale

There are not many courses where Tony Finau has a poor course history. Week in and week out Finau is a golfer you can feel confident in playing in your DFS rosters. After posting a T22 in his first start at The WMPO Finau has missed four straight cuts at this event. At the heart of this poor play seems to be worse than normal putting. In 12 career rounds at TPC Scottsdale Finau has only managed to post 4 rounds in the positive in the strokes gained putting category. While that does not look good on paper, it would not surprise anyone to see Finau figure these greens this week. Priced up higher than his course form would indicate Finau is trending as sub 10% golfer this week. For those looking to buck the negative course history narrative, Finau represents a great place to differentiate in terms of a top-end spend this week.

Tony Finau looks to bounce back from a disappointing week

Tony Finau did not exactly set the world on fire in his start at last week's ZOZO Championship. At this point in his career, Finau will always garnish a fair share of ownership, and if there is always a chance that some in the community will not add this top 15 player in the world to a roster after last week's disappointment. Finau narrowly missed getting his second career win at last year's HSBC WGC event and has a great skill set to compete again this year. Finau is both long off the tee and great with his approach making him an ideal fit for Sheshan International Golf Club. Even at a high price tag, Finau has the type of game that can pay off his salary despite a top 10 type finish. In his two previous starts at this event, Finau has shot under par in six of his eight rounds. If you are not quite high on taking Finau in your builds this week, then there is always merit for attacking this golfer in showdown slates as he has a very high 28% birdie rate in his 8 rounds at this course.

Out For Revenge After Last Year's Close Loss

Finau has a reputation as a bomber, and he’s certainly plenty long off the tee. That will help him on the par fives and shorter par fours around Sheshan — at least one of which could be drive-able throughout the week. However, despite his reputation as a bomber, Finau has a solid approach game as well. He ranks second on Tour in strokes gained on approach throughout the fall swing, and his combination of distance and approach play should serve him very well this week. He has finished 11th and 2nd in his two previous trips here, and you know he is itching to get back at it after losing to Schauffele in a playoff a year ago. I hope his poor showing at the Zozo last week will help to keep ownership down, as I am fully aboard the Finau express in GPP formats.

Good Course History and Ready for a Breakthrough

Has Finau won on tour? Technically. Does anyone treat the Puerto Rico Open as a real win? Absolutely not. I’ve long said that his first real PGA Tour win is going to come on bentgrass greens and/or at the U.S. Open. This is the closest event to his home (Utah) and unlike many in the field, he’s not going to be swayed by the distractions of Vegas. He has played here in each of the last five years and he’s never missed a cut. In fact, he has never finished outside of the top 45. These are bentgrass greens and this is a course that rewards elite ball striking. The only knock that I can find on Finau is that he’s played the last two events over on the Euro Tour. While he played well in both the BMW PGA Championship (T51) and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship (T10), that’s a lot of travel and golf in a three-week stretch. Clearly, this event means enough for him to make the trip back to the states.

Tony Finau looks to bounce back from a missed cut in a major

At this point in the season last year Tony Finau was very much the darling of DFS golf. With top ten or better finishes in 3 out of the 4 major championships, Finau set the bar very high for big events in the future. After a top-five finish at this year's Masters Finau let his supporters down with a T64 at The PGA and a missed cut at The U.S. Open. Ranked inside the top 20 in both The Offical Golf Rankings and this year's FedEx Cup standings Finau is still very much a player of talent in the world of golf. Currently projected at a low ownership number Finau is a talent worth taking an overweight stand on in big field GPP's. In addition to having the talent needed to pay off his salary on finish position alone, Finau has historically been a golfer that can crush DraftKings scoring in light of a top-end showing.
