Here’s the third of our four profiles on contestants in the DraftKings Sports Betting National Championship — the inaugural three day sports betting competition that begins today, Friday Jan. 11 and concludes at the close of the weekend’s final NFL Divisional Round game between the Eagles and Saints.

This is the third installment to feature an entrant coming into the New Jersey-based contest via a DraftKings DFS qualifier. Chances are if you’re reading this, you’re familiar with beermakersfan, aka Chris Prince, a DFS analyst for RotoGrinders and on SiriusXMFantasy.

Please go here for our interviews with h3budda and here for tipandpick. The fourth discussion (to be published shortly) brings thoughts from Gill Alexander of the Vegas Sports and Information Network (VSiN).  Alexander hosts the program “A Number Game” on VSiN and the “Beating the Book” podcast, which highlights the viewpoints and varied perspectives of a who’s who of prominent players throughout the sports betting and fantasy sports industries.

Now, let’s pour some Beer:

RotoGrinders (RG) Have you used the DraftKings Sportsbook before or another new, legal sportsbook in New Jersey?

Chris Prince (Beer): No, I’ve never been to New Jersey so I haven’t had a chance to officially use it yet. I downloaded the app after I qualified for the event so I could mess around with it and to get a feel for it to make things more comfortable once the competition begins.

RG: What are your impressions of it?

Beer: First thing that jumped out at me is how user friendly the app is. DK did a great job in making it both easy on the eyes and a piece of cake to navigate around through the different sports and bet types. I love the cash out option that they have to give the bettor even more options and the live lines update quickly which is a plus for a guy like me that loves the in-game betting option.

RG:  Any sense of what the competition will be like at the SBNC?

Beer: This is such a unique competition in that nobody knows what to expect because it’s the first event of its kind. There will be competitors from all different backgrounds and areas of expertise including sports bettors, poker players, DFS players and many others. A spectacle like this will draw the best of the best from all of these areas so I’m expecting some very good competition in this event.  The beauty of this event is how much people’s strategies will adjust based on the competition and how the leaderboard is looking. The people who are playing it steady may be forced to become more aggressive if they fall too far behind. Bottom line, a million dollar first place prize will bring out the competitor in all of us.

RG: How do you think contestants focused primarily on sports betting, poker and DFS, will approach this contest differently (if at all)?

Beer: I truly believe that all the different specialties share so many of the same traits such as bankroll management, understanding of odds and most of all, they all bring out the competitor in us that there isn’t a huge gap or advantage for any particular skill set in my opinion. Obviously the pro gambler would be the person most likely to have an edge, but with this being such a new concept with so many different variables all going on at once and with a wild, wild west type feeling to it, it may negate that advantage.

RG:  Are you entering with a specific plan of attack or some sides/totals/props in mind?

I have always been a “Go big or go home” kind of guy so I will be more on the aggressive side of things without going too crazy and busting out on the first day. A blend of parlays to try and hit something big along with finding spreads/totals I feel are off and attacking those is my basic plan coming in. But like I said, my strategy is mainly to adapt and adjust to what is going on around me. I’ll also look to take a contrarian type approach in some of the sports and bets I’ll be making during the weekend to differentiate from the what the majority of the field will be betting.

RG: What sport(s) besides football do you think you dabble in or consider for wagering purposes?

Beer: I’ve been looking ahead at what sports will be going on during the competition and getting a plan of attack ready. The key for me is talking with those that are smarter than me in different sports like tennis, golf and others. The more options I have that I feel comfortable betting on the bigger portfolio I have to work with. I have to imagine the entire field is very knowledgeable on the big sports like NFL, NBA and CBB but I think there could be a nice edge in some of the niche sports that are available.

RG: Any guess as to how high the winning bankroll will get?

Beer: Initially I was in the $40,000-$50,000 range but I honestly think this thing jumps into the six figures, so I’ll say $135,000.

RG: Are there any contest rules that could use clarification, in your opinion?

Beer: Not really, they laid out the rules very well. The only thing I would like to see more clarity on is if there will be any max on bets and what that number is so competitors know in advance.

RG: If you were to combine your time/efforts spent researching/modeling/preparing for DFS contests and sports betting, what percentage do you estimate is devoted to the latter?

Beer: Studying the spreads/totals, line movements and the way the public is betting as far as percentage of bets compared with percentage of money coming in are all foundational pieces in my daily/weekly DFS process. But as a primarily DFS player that dabbles in the sports betting arena, it’s probably a 75/25 split for me.

RG: Anything else/thoughts you can add about the event?

Beer: I’m just honored and excited to be a part of history with this being the first installment of the DK SBNC. I was lucky enough to qualify for the first ever live final on Fanduel way back in 2010, and it’s all come full circle for me to be a part of this first ever DK sports betting event. I think this thing has immense potential to grow even bigger moving forward. The multiple strategies one will need to take this thing down, not to mention the mix of patience, game theory and aggressiveness to bag the milly is so intriguing and fascinating and I can’t wait to dive in and get this party started!
