DraftKings Company Information

DraftKings was founded in 2012 in Boston, MA by three former VistaPrint employees who had an idea to turn season long fantasy sports into a daily model. Their first product was one-on-one baseball and launched on MLB opening day.

The company announced in July 2012 that they had received $1.4 million in funding and another non-disclosed amount in 2013 from MLB. In November 2013, DraftKings received $24 million in series B funding and began acquiring smaller DFS companies on their road to becoming the biggest DFS site with over 50,000 active daily users by 2014.

As the company continued to grow, they penned deals with the NHL, MLB, ESPN, Fox Sports and the Kraft group that included both funding and advertising agreements. They also had their share of legal issues including market strategy investigations and questions surrounding if DFS is even legain in the US. This led to a $1.3 million payment to the Massachusetts Attorney Generals office.

In 2017, DraftKings and rival FanDuel unsuccessfully attempted a merger, but were blocked the FTC citing that the companies combining would cause a monopoly in the DFS industry. The two companies owned over 90% of the market at the time.

When the US Supreme Court declared PASPA, a 1992 law that essentially outlawed sports betting in states outside of Nevada, unconstitutional in 2018, DraftKings jumped on the opportunity to become the first legal online sportsbook in New Jersey. Launching almost a month before any other online sportsbook in August 2018, DraftKings has continued to be a popular choice, and have held the number one or two spot ever since.

DraftKings now is now turning their attention to expanding throughout the US market as states, one by one, pass regulations legalizing online sports wagering.
