DraftKings Company Information
DraftKings is one of the biggest names in Daily Fantasy Sports and was the brain child of three former VistaPrint employees. Launching three years after rival FanDuel in Boston Massachusetts, they quickly raised over $1.4 million in funding. A year after opening their doors, DraftKings raised an additional $24 million in funding from Major League Baseball, an industry first. DraftKings quickly rose to the number two DFS site in the US, and by 2014 reported 50,000 active daily users and after acquiring rival DraftStreet, nearly doubled that number.
DraftKings continued to grow and in 2015, they signed deals with the NHL and MLB, an advertising deal with ESPN worth $250 million and a funding deal with Fox Sports, the Kraft Group and other investors worth over $300 million. ESPN eventually backed out of their deal due to legal uncertainties surrounding DFS.
DraftKings had their share of legal problems including market strategy investigations and questions about if DFS is even legal in the US. This led to a $1.3 million payment to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office.
In 2017, the two leading DFS sites in the country, DraftKings and FanDuel, announced they intended to merge the two sites, but were later blocked by the FTC, citing that the merger would cause a monopoly. The two companies owned over 90% of the market at the time.
In 2018, the Supreme Court declared the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act unconstitutional which allows for individual states to choose to regulate sports betting within their borders. New Jersey jumped on the opportunity and DraftKings was the first legal online sportsbook in the state launching in August 2018, almost a month before anyone else. Since then, DraftKings has sat among the top 2 sites in the state in terms of revenue and popularity.
