DraftKings’ first-ever Sports Betting National Championship crowned a winner Sunday night. Rleejr86 took home $1 million for winning the contest with a final bankroll of $101,474. The winning bet was $47,500 to win $90,725 on the Philadelphia Eagles +8.5.

When the Eagles covered, it moved Rleejr86 into first place. However, the event wasn’t without controversy, as some bettors weren’t able to place wagers in time for the Eagles-Saints game.

Rufus Peabody, aka ‘Opti5624,’ went all in for $42,875.30 on the Patriots -3.5. Following New England’s 41-28 win over the Chargers, Peabody moved into first place with a bankroll of $81,891.82. The only problem is Peabody’s Patriots bet didn’t grade as a win in time for him to wager on the Eagles-Saints game. Peabody was relegated to waiting with no skin in the game.

He ended up taking home $250,000 for third place after both Rleejr86 and Nomoreiloveyous passed him. Nomoreiloveyous bet $35,000.00 to win $66,850.00 on the Eagles +8.5. He won $350,000 for second place with a bankroll of $88,206.07.

DraftKings issued a statement on the controversy, saying they will learn and improve from the experience.

Peabody wasn’t the only contestant shut out from betting the Eagles-Saints game. Others, including RotoGrinders’ co-founder and CEO Cal Spears, had all their money tied up in the Chargers-Patriots game. They didn’t get funded the winnings until after kickoff of the late game, making them frustrated bystanders for the Eagles-Saints matchup. Spears finished in 11th place with a bankroll of $23,962.49 to take home $15,000.

Below is the final top-15 leaderboard from the DraftKings Sports Betting National Championship:

In terms of numbers, there was $4,653,018.33 wagered by the contestants overt he three-day contest. Six players finished with a bankroll of more than 40,000 with three topping $80,000.

We’ll have to see what comes from the controversy but it certainly didn’t end up the way DraftKings was hoping. The contest did bring attention to the sportsbook but given the issues on Sunday, it’s not the attention DraftKings was hoping to get from the event.
