2024 NBA All-Star Game Odds & Betting Tips

The NBA’s mid-season festivities will wrap up on Sunday evening with the 73rd annual NBA All-Star Game. Tip off is set for 8:00 p.m. ET on TNT from Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Indianapolis is hosting the weekend’s events for the first time since 1985, when Larry Bird was the regular season MVP and the Los Angeles Lakers, led by Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, were NBA champions.

All-Star Game Format

Following multiple years of using an untimed Final Target Score for the final period, the All-Star Game will return to a more traditional format in 2024. The traditional scoring system with four 12-minute quarters will return. In each quarter, teams will still compete to win money for the charity of their choosing.

Also returning for 2024 is the traditional matchup between the Eastern Conference All-Stars and the Western Conference All-Stars. The return to conference-split teams marks an end of 6 consecutive seasons in which the two All-Star teams were named after their team captain. Last time the East played the West in a traditional matchup, the West emerged victorious by a final score of 192-182.

NBA All-Star Game Betting Tips

During the “Team Captain” era of the NBA All-Star Game, it was evident that certain players such as LeBron James had extra motivation for winning the annual event. In 6 years as a captain, James’ teams went 5-1.

Though there are technically still team captains for 2024, the captains no longer get to select their own team via draft. Instead, each team is comprised of players from their respective conference. As a result, some of the team-building edge that we have seen in recent seasons has been lost to the return of the traditional format.

Prior to the “Team Captain” era, the Western Conference had won 7 of 9 head-to-head meetings. On Sunday, I will be publishing my full breakdown on the game, highlighting whether to expect continued dominance from the West or if the East is capable of coming out on top this year.
