After a stretch of challenging courses and loaded fields, the PGA TOUR offers a change of pace for the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic. Contested at Detroit Golf Club, this week’s tournament will feature plenty of scoring in a watered-down field. Sign me up!

We need a change of pace after smaller fields with only the top-ranked players in the world. While there is talent atop this week’s odds board, we witness a field filled with players hungry for their first victory. Let’s break down the golf betting odds, the field, and this week’s course before building our betting card.

Rickie Fowler +5000

Here are the recent winners of the Rocket Mortgage Classic:

Finally, a 156-man field with the top 65 and ties slated to make the cut. Last year, Rickie Fowler finally broke through after a season of close calls. Fowler is back to defend his championship at +5000.

Tom Kim and Cameron Young headline the field after putting on a show last weekend. Cameron Young joined the record books with a 59 on Saturday. Kim played against Scottie Scheffler in a playoff and succumbed after one hole. Both gentlemen seem to be tracking in a positive direction and should be considered the class of this field.

Tony Finau sits out this event after winning in 2022. Cam Davis and Nate Lashley will play this week. Akshay Bhatia, Min Woo Lee, Taylor Pendrith, and Stephan Jaeger round out the top five on this week’s board.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic Betting Tips & Preview

Detroit Golf Club is a Donald Ross design, as classical as a classic parkland course can get. The fairways are wide (15th widest on TOUR), there isn’t much trouble anywhere, and everything is straight and flat. With extremely wide fairways and water only impacting one hole, this course is very gettable and should yield a very, very low winning score.

The bentgrass greens are pretty small relative to the standard on TOUR. Further, the smallish greens and the rough present the only defense the course offers players. Thus, scoring has been copious over the first five editions of this tournament. If there is any moisture, expect a pile of birdies each day.

The course is a typical par 72 layout. Nine of the 10 par 4s are less than 460 yards. The par 5s are especially easy and demand scoring from players, with two of them playing at birdie rates higher than 40%. This course represents a massive departure from the more challenging courses of late. The winner will be -20 or better.

In the 5 years of this event, every player in the top 10 has gained strokes in putting. Putting will be crucial in a birdie fest. We will need to weigh this statistic heavily.

We will emphasize SG: Approach as all players in the top 10 also gained on approach over the history of this event. Further, Biride or Better % is back after a few tougher weeks with the elevated events and majors. We aren’t too worried about saving pars, around-the-green play, or scrambling at this course. If our golfers are scrambling, they are not winning the tournament. We will plan for ceiling performances with our model.

We will include the following categories in our model this week over the last 24 rounds on the PGA TOUR:

The Rocket Mortgage Classic Golf Picks

Unless mentioned otherwise, all Strokes Gained statistics will be referenced over the player’s previous 24 rounds on the PGA TOUR.

Cameron Young +1600 (bet365)

Tom Kim rates out first in this week’s model over the last 24 rounds on the PGA TOUR. So, naturally, I will skip him and bet a comparably-based golfer with poorer recent form.

Cam Young – I cannot quit you. I was so happy that our Cameron etched his name in the record books while also not winning an event where we didn’t bet him as an outright winner. Young checks so many boxes at this event in his past. Maybe his performance at the Travelers will be a springboard to something greater.

Young is still in search of his first win on the PGA TOUR. In a weaker field, perhaps our buddy can carry his form from last weekend with him to Detroit. We are betting on his outright and likely using him or Tom Kim as our one-and-done selection.

Davis Thompson +3500 (FanDuel)

davis-thompson-800x480

Davis Thompson comes in at our second leg with a far more expensive price point than we are accustomed to. With the strength of this field being a touch weaker, Thompson is truly in the upper echelon at this event.

He ranks in the top 20 in SG: OTT, Birdie or Better %, and our key par 4 range. He is coming off a T10 finish at the U.S. Open and hasn’t missed a cut at this event. We add him to our card for this week.

Ryan Fox +5500 (Caesars)

ryan-fox-800x480

Finally, Ryan Fox takes our 3rd slot, even as a debutant in the field. Fox is a great driver of the golf ball with plenty of length.

Fox lacks in only SG: Approach. That is a very big one, but Fox checks every other box. If this truly becomes a bomb-and-gauge event, Fox should excel. Along with his driving, Fox rates out highly on par 5s and putting.

At +5500, Fox is a cheaper option in our 3rd slot. After Fox, we add a few long shots to save money after spending big on Cameron Young.

Quick Hitters

S.H. Kim +12500 (BetRivers) – 3rd in putting and 11th in birdies. I would have written him up, but I prefer to go in odds order.

Justin Lower +12500 (ESPNBet) – Lower checks plenty of boxes at his price, including putting and Birdie or Better % (third).

Jacob Bridgeman +15000 (FanDuel) – 11th in putting and 6th in birdies; the young pro showed up in Canada and could follow here.

Cameron Young +1600 2 32
Davis Thompson +3500 0.9 31.5
Ryan Fox +5500 0.6 33
S.H. Kim +12500 0.25 31.25
Justin Lower +12500 0.25 31.25
Jacob Bridgeman +15000 0.2 30

One-and-Done Pick: Cameron Young or Tom Kim

Rocket Mortage Betting Units: 4.2

2024 Net Units: 254.6

We came up empty last weekend after Scottie Scheffler won… again. However, we were successfully able to build our first future bet for The Open Championship. I decided to make Rory McIlroy the centerpiece for this tournament and buy into the revenge TOUR hype. With odds dancing around +700, we have only 30.875 units on Rory thus far at a measly 0.45 unit cost because of promotional betting.
