This week’s edition of Sunday Night Football will feature Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. San Francisco will be hoping to keep their NFC West division title hopes alive with a win. Allen, the current MVP favorite, and the Bills have won each of their last 6 games and can essentially clinch their division with a win this evening.

Ahead of kickoff, oddsmakers have priced the Bills as 6.5-point home favorites on the spread. The total is set at 44.5 points.

Let’s take a deeper look at the matchup to see where NFL bettors can find value at sportsbooks.

Though many pundits are billing tonight’s matchup as a “Snow Game,” RotoGrinders meteorologist Kevin Roth isn’t expecting the weather to be that impactful. Roth calls the prospect of “snow-mageddon” highly unlikely and says there is a chance that the 49ers and Bills could avoid playing in snow altogether during tonight’s action. The only noteworthy weather to consider are 10+ mph winds, with gusts occasionally reaching 20 mph. Still, Roth “would not call it a high-impact weather game.”

San Francisco 49ers Preview

Purdy back under center for San Francisco, Williams and Banks still OUT

Following a 1-game absence due to a shoulder injury, Brock Purdy is expected to be back under center this evening for the 49ers. Though the return of their starting quarterback is obviously good news, Purdy won’t have his usual protection up front in Week 13.

All-Pro LT Trent Williams and starting LG Aaron Banks have both been ruled out for this primetime affair. San Francisco will also continue to be without WR Brandon Aiyuk, who is on injured reserve.

Even the return of star RB Christian McCaffrey has been unable to ignite this offensive attack. In 3 games since McCaffrey returned to the field, the 49ers’ offense has scored 23 points against the Buccaneers, 17 points against the Seahawks, and 10 points against the Packers. This could be another tough matchup for them, facing a Buffalo defense that is allowing only 18 points per game since Week 6.

Injuries piling up for 49ers defense

San Francisco’s defense is once again facing a difficult task, with a number of key contributors set to miss tonight’s game against Buffalo. EDGE Nick Bosa, DT Jordan Elliott, LB Dre Greenlaw, and CB Deommodore Lenoir have each been ruled out for Week 13.

Bosa leads the team with 7 sacks and 10 tackles for loss and is a perennial candidate for defensive player of the year honors. Lenoir is tied for the 2nd-most tackles on San Francisco’s defense in 2024 and tied for the team lead in passes defensed. He’s been one of the best coverage cornerbacks in the NFL this fall, ranking 24th out of 113 players at his position in coverage grade, per PFF. Elliott is a less significant loss, but he is a 300-pound rotational player on the defensive line who plays a key role for this unit. Greenlaw is yet to play in 2024 due to injury, but he was 2nd on the team in tackles in 2023.

Simply, this group is missing a lot of talent. The 49ers allowed 38 points last week to the Packers with Bosa and Greenlaw missing. They are even more shorthanded heading into this matchup against Buffalo.

Buffalo Bills Preview

Allen, Bills eye 10th win of the season

Outside of a rough 2-game stretch in Week 4 and Week 5, during which leading WR Khalil Shakir was banged up, Buffalo’s offense has been one of the most prolific units in the entire NFL. Josh Allen and company enter play averaging 29.1 points per game, which is more than every team except Baltimore and Detroit.

Since Week 6, Buffalo’s offense ranks 3rd in EPA/play and 2nd in success rate. Even more impressively, they rank in the top 5 in EPA/play and success rate through the air and on the ground, giving them one of the most balanced offensive attacks in the entire league.

The return of WR Amari Cooper , who hasn’t played since Week 11, gives Allen an additional weapon, which could potentially make this group even more dangerous.

Milano to make 2024 debut

All-Pro LB Matt Milano has been activated from injured reserve and will make his 2024 debut against the 49ers. Milano, one of the best all-around linebackers in the league, tore his biceps during training camp, which delayed his start to the season.

In Milano’s last full season in 2022, he was 2nd on Buffalo’s defense with 99 tackles, led the team with 12 tackles for loss, and was 2nd on the defense in passes defensed. His return should provide a significant boost to a unit that has already been playing at a high level in recent weeks.

49ers vs. Bills Prediction

There has been a lot of talk about the weather heading into tonight’s game between the 49ers and Bills, but RotoGrinders’ meteorologist Kevin Roth doesn’t see this as a “high-impact weather game,” with most of the snow moving out prior to kickoff. These are also offenses that don’t need to “air it out” to score points. Buffalo has one of the most balanced offensive attacks in the NFL and gets a great matchup against an injury-depleted San Francisco defense. The 49ers are capable of running the ball with Christian McCaffrey, and their offense excels at gaining yards after the catch. This is a situation where buying the dip could be worthwhile, with the majority of the public overreacting to the initial forecast and driving this number down in recent days.

PICK: Over 44.5 (-112, DraftKings)
