What Vegas Says

Pitcher Grind Down

CWSJohn Danks has posted some great numbers at U.S. Cellular Field this season. He has a 2.22 ERA to go along with a 0.780 WHIP. The matchup against the Braves isn’t particularly great, but you do get the added bonus of more K’s. The Braves rank near the top of the league in strike outs. I wouldn’t put Danks up there with the top 5 pitchers today, but I think he is a good play if the price is right. In Play

ATLTim Hudson has been very good at home, but has had his fair share of struggles on the road. He is 2-7 with a 5.19 ERA on the road this season. On paper, you would think that the White Sox were a good matchup for him, but the White Sox have been heating up offensively. Avoid

Batter Grind Down

CWS – Hudson has only given up 10 HR’s in 19 starts this season so I would immediately rule out Adam Dunn because that’s all you are really hoping for when you take Dunn. I would instead target the guys that have some decent pop and that can run the bases like Alejandro De Aza and Alex Rios.

ATL – The Braves have only managed to hit .238 against lefties this season with more K’s than hits. If you are going to target the Braves today, do it very sparingly.

What Vegas Says

Pitcher Grind Down

STLJake Westbrook is a ground ball pitcher that has to rely on luck most of the time. If the ground balls happen to squeeze through the gaps, then he has a bad night, but if they are hit into gloves, then things usually go pretty well for him. Westbrook does not get very many K’s either. I think he will pick up the win, but the upside just isn’t there. In Play

SDJason Marquis has been very lucky this season. His BABIP of 0.247 shows that he has been one of the luckier pitchers when it comes to balls in play. His high WHIP would also lead you to believe that his ERA is higher. I think the second half of the season, that luck is going to catch up with him. Avoid

Batter Grind Down

STL – Great spot for the Cardinals who can really put a big number of runs on the board. They will likely be one of the more popular stacks in the Midsummer Classic tonight and for good reason. Lot of good options in this lineup.

SD – Because Westbrook is a ground ball pitcher, I recommend taking quick batters against him. Someone like Everth Cabrera that could beat out a couple of infield hits. Also has great potential to steal bases.

What Vegas Says

Pitcher Grind Down

COL – Jorge De La Rosa is pitching in Coors Field which means, don’t waste your time researching his stats, just avoid him for better options.

CHC – Same goes for Jeff Samardzija who has gotten blasted in his last few starts.

Batter Grind Down

COL – Could be a great spot for both offenses. Not only is this game in Coors Field, but Samardzija has been getting blasted lately. Target Carlos Gonzalez and Michael Cuddyer. Both have great shots to homer tonight.

CHC – For the Cubs, it’s hard not to love Alfonso Soriano against the lefty De La Rosa. Soriano is batting .291 against lefties with 5 HR’s. I also think Starlin Castro is finally back in play after a terrible start to the season.

What Vegas Says

Pitcher Grind Down

LAAJered Weaver has had great starts in 3 of his last 4 games and has always been a pitcher that pitches well at home. This season at Angels Stadium he has posted a 2.87 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. He’s a great option against OAK tonight. Target

OAK – A.J. Griffin is a high strike out pitcher, but he is also a very risky play. The Angels bats can get hot at any time and I think he is safe to avoid unless you really want to take some risks in these big tournaments. Avoid

Batter Grind Down

LAA – Love both Mike Trout and Josh Hamilton against Griffin tonight. I think they could both homer. I think Hamilton is primed for a big second half to the season.

OAK – The A’s are a tough team to predict on an individual level and don’t have a very good matchup against Weaver anyway. Avoid

What Vegas Says

Pitcher Grind Down

SFChad Gaudin had two very good starts before the All-Star break, but I just don’t see him continuing that success long term. The matchup against the D-Backs is average at best. In Play – But just because it’s in San Fran.

ARI – Of the two pitchers tonight, I would much rather take Ian Kennedy than Gaudin. Kennedy is a pitcher with good upside and is pitching in a pitcher-friendly park. In Play

Batter Grind Down

SF – Panlo Sandoval really went on a tear right before the All-Star break, we will see if he can carry that over to after the break. Buster Posey is in play if the price is right and Gregor Blanco is a sneaky play thanks to his base running ability.

ARI – If you like BvP, then you will be all over Jason Kubel tonight. He is 9/13 with 2 HR’s against Gaudin. He will be dirt cheap too.
