MLB Player Props Today

Marcus Stroman o17.5 outs recorded (-141), Caesars

In his first start of the season, Marcus Stroman delivered six shutout innings against the Milwaukee Brewers. In typical Stroman-fashion, he induced a high ground ball rate and worked efficiently. Last year, Stroman ranked 13th in ground ball rate and 53rd in pitches per plate appearances among 140 pitchers to throw at least 100 innings. This afternoon, he gets a favorable matchup against the Texas Rangers in pitcher-friendly weather with a pitcher-friendly umpire calling balls and strikes. The over makes a lot of sense in this spot.

Hunter Greene u17.5 outs recorded (+100), BetMGM

In 2022, Hunter Greene recorded fewer than 18 outs in 16 of his 25 starts. The primary reason that he was unable to consistently get deep into games was due to his inefficiency getting through at-bats, particularly the second time through the order. Last season, Greene ranked 132nd out of 140 pitchers in pitches per plate appearance (4.14 pitches/PA). In his first start to begin 2023, he averaged 4.61 pitches per plate appearance. The weather is pitcher-friendly in Philadelphia this afternoon, but Greene has never been a pitch-to-contact guy on the mound, so he is unlikely to receive any sort of efficiency boost here. The Phillies offense is unlikely to give him many quick outs on balls in play either, due to the fact that they rank 28th in in-zone contact percentage so far this year. The under looks like a great bet.

MLB DFS Pick’em

Madison Bumgarner less than 4.0 pitcher strikeouts, PrizePicks

According to props.cash, Madison Bumgarner has recorded fewer than five strikeouts in 21 of his last 31 trips to the mound. Last year, he ranked in the 15th percentile in strikeout percentage, ninth percentile in whiff percentage, and the 17th percentile in chase rate. Thus, if there is any way for him to obtain swings and misses, it is almost always on pitches outside of the strike zone. To begin the new year, the Los Angeles Dodgers have swung at the second-fewest pitches outside of the strike zone of any team in baseball. This is also a hyper-proximity matchup for Bumgarner, who faced the Dodgers only six days ago in Hollywood. In that game, he tallied only two strikeouts. The familiarity typically favors the hitters more so than the pitcher – expect Bumgarner to have a difficult time generating swings and misses again in this spot.
