Daily Batter Breakdown: Friday, August 8th
Welcome to the Daily Batter Breakdown. Each day, with at least 8 games on the night slate, I’ll breakdown some of the best top tier hitters to target based on matchup. The biggest split taken into account will be left/right, but each player card will also show park factors, player salaries and then a description of why I’ll be targeting him. Be sure to check out the FAQ for more information on specific stats.
A pretty solid slate going today as there are a few bad pitchers and some good spots for the hitters going. There could be a decent spread between the percentages owned tonight because I could see arguments for a lot of different players tonight.

J.P. Arencibia
Arencibia is cheap as well tonight against Oberholtzer and has been hitting the ball pretty well since coming up for the Rangers. Texas has put together a mash squad here of who appear to be rejects but for some reason they are homering pretty well. Arencibia has a 1.000 OPS against lefties with 3 homers in 30 at bats and is hitting in a hitters park tonight. The Rangers have a 4 over under which is fairly high and someone has to score those runs if they are to get to that number.

Albert Pujols
There are lots of good first base options today and one of those has to be Albert. He’s having a solid season and while he’s pretty expensive, the Angels have a great potential against Webster who has been less than stellar in his 2 appearances this year. Not a great sample size, but the .829 OPS to right handers given up by Webster should help Pujols and Pujols has always been a good hitter against either side.

Ian Kinsler
Kinsler has been decent against right handers this year and I’m really looking forward to what the Tigers big hitters can do in the Rogers Centre today. Kinsler is cheap and although he’s struggled a bit lately, I like the potential against Dickey who has allowed a higher OPS to right handers than left handers. Dickey is also a bit homer prone in his home park and when the knuckleball isn’t moving, the other team can put up a ton of runs.

Lonnie Chisenhall
Chisehall has one of the top wOBAs today and I’m really picking on Rogers today. The Indians lefties look solid and they have one of the top over/unders of the night. Look below to Brantley to see how bad Rogers has been against lefties this year and pitching in Yankee Stadium isn’t going to help. Chisenhall is cheap and has really hit well against right handers this year.

Adam Rosales
I’m not really sure what to think about Rosales right now. He’s been great since coming up for the Rangers in hitter friendly parks, but the problem is that he’s had awful numbers in all of his previous seasons. He’s still decently cheap and I want to ride the hot hand against Oberholtzer since the Rangers have good potential today but I would really use caution.

Michael Brantley
Not a lot of people are high on Esmil Rogers today espcially not the RG tools who have 3 of the Indians outfielders at the top wOBA guys. I am bullish on Brantley today but I don’t know if I am that down on Rogers. You’ll have to pay for Brantley but I always like lefties that crush right handers in Yankee Stadium. Rogers has a 1.5 WHIP and a 1.089 OPS allowed to left handed hitters this year, so load up those Indian lefties.

Desmond Jennings
Wada has been fairly effective since joining the cubs rotation and will take on the Rays today. Jennings should be close to the leadoff spot today against the Cubs and has destroyed left handers this year to a .880 OPS. Jennings has the power to put one in the seats but also has speed. Wada has really been good against lefties but struggles against right handed hitters allowing a .877 OPS. Jennings has one of the top wOBAs on the day and shouldn’t be highly owned.

Mark Trumbo
Trumbo has been hot with the stick lately and it’s only a matter of time until he starts getting the power we are used to. Matzek was horrible last time out against the Tigers and has really struggled against right handed pitching this year giving up all 5 homers and an .859 OPS. Trumbo, although he’s having a poor season still has a .902 OPS against left handers and has hit them well.

Brandon Moss
Moss is in the same boat as the guy below really but surprisingly I actually like Davis more for cash games. Moss faces Gibson who has been the most up and down pitcher all of this year. He struggles against left handed batters and Moss has hit 19 homers against right handed pitchers but Moss always has the 0-fer ability and Gibson has shut many an offense down this year. Lots of 1st base options today and while I think Moss has some of the highest upside, he also is very likely for downside too.

Chris Davis
Still cheap almost everywhere, one of the best RHP crushers of last year gets to face one of the worst pitchers against left handed batters anywhere. Davis has had a horrible season but has the ability to get it going at anytime and has incredible power. It doesn’t really matter where he’s batting here I love him tonight against Masterson as he seems to have rediscovered a way to hit a baseball with a couple homers in the last few games.
