Daily Batter Breakdown: Wed, August 6th

Welcome to the Daily Batter Breakdown. Each day, with at least 8 games on the night slate, I’ll breakdown some of the best top tier hitters to target based on matchup. The biggest split taken into account will be left/right, but each player card will also show park factors, player salaries and then a description of why I’ll be targeting him. Be sure to check out the FAQ for more information on specific stats.

We have a game in Coors tonight that may not be the highest over/under game on the board due to 2 decent pitchers against bad offenses going at it. The players are still in play there but I am also trying to search out some other guys that might be of use today.

Salvador Perez

After demolishing Wade Miley last night, Perez continues the onslaught today against Collmenter. Perez has been pretty good lately and his .288 average and .758 OPS against righties fits well with his salary. His reverse splits should be solid against Collmenter who hasn’t been good lately at all surrendering 4 HR in his last 3 shorter outings and he has also given up a pretty decent wOBA to right handed batters as well.

Ryan Howard

If you really want to go with a boom or bust pick, I would go with Howard today whose price is literally at the bottom of the barrel. He’s been awful lately and strikes out a ton but that doesn’t matter on the two biggest sites. He’s so cheap but still brings the homer power he has had previously and while both parties have had reverse splits this year, their careers have shown different types of numbers. Howard definitely is going to be a low owned high upside high downside option.

0.914 0.000 $3,500 $9,200 $4,600 $76,100 $7,400 $9,050

Ian Kinsler

I really like Kinsler today who hasn’t really been doing much in the terms of power hitting lately but has been augmenting his average with a few knock singles. Kinsler is better than the price point he’s at now and gets to face Chris Capuano tonight who really doesn’t have much to go on this year but was awful against right handers the previous two years. The Tigers’ offense is one of the best in the majors and he should benefit from Cabrera and Martinez behind him.

Nick Castellanos

Another cheap Tiger I really like tonight is Nick Castellanos who should be a great play at 3rd against Capuano. I noted above how I really don’t like Capuano against right handers (He’s homer prone and allowed a .858 OPS last year) and Castellanos has almost hit left handers this year at a .800 OPS which is solid for anyone under 3k on FD and really cheap everywhere else.

1.107 0.000 $3,900 $9,100 $4,600 $68,200 $8,300 $9,100

Jose Reyes

Reyes is hot right now and while I generally don’t like to use him too much against left handers due to his lack of power against them and that he’s better against right handers in general, tonight’s matchup is solid. He’s fairly affordable and is coming off of 2 solid games. Chen has been great lately but in his history he’s had difficulty pitching at a high level for a long period of time and he’s also been homer prone to right handed batters.

1.383 0.000 $4,300 $10,150 $5,300 $88,400 $8,500 $10,150

Anthony Rizzo

I’m really not too enamored with the Coors Field matchup today. The two teams don’t have overpowering offenses and the pitchers are actually fairly decent. This will be the first time the Rockies start a right handed pitcher in a very long time and if I was to go for a team here it would be the Cubs. I really like Rizzo against Lyles as he has blossomed into one of the top hitters in the game and is in Coors Field where he will look to bolster his homer totals.

jayson-werth-100x75 Jayson Werth

1.009 0.000 $3,600 $9,300 $4,200 $74,300 $7,500 $9,400

Jayson Werth

Niese has actually been solid for the Mets lately and pitching deep into games but a few of his peripheral stats concern me. He’s not walking a lot of people but he is giving up a bunch of hits. He gives up about 3 ER per game and if he’s not grounding guys into double plays, he’s going to be giving up runs. I like Werth as a cash game option but I wouldn’t use him too heavily in GPPs as I think the massive upside to the Nationals is limited tonight.

rajai-davis-100x75 Rajai Davis

0.914 0.000 $3,300 $8,250 $4,300 $67,400 $7,600 $8,300

Rajai Davis

If you haven’t been following Davis for the past 2 years you might not realize how well he hits lefties for such a little guy. The fact that he doesn’t steal as often against lefties is not too worrisome when you think that he’s hitting them at a huge wOBA and .983 OPS. Generally he’s already on 2nd against them anyways. Capuano as noted above is not one to trust and the Tigers have one of the highest over/unders tonight which is definitely good news for Davis who should lead off.

nick-markakis-100x75 Nick Markakis

1.107 0.000 $3,100 $8,500 $4,200 $77,200 $6,300 $8,150

Nick Markakis

Markakis really isn’t getting any love, even in the salary point of few for what he’s been doing lately. He’s one of the hotter hitters with multiple hit games in 4 of 5 with 2 homers in that span. He leads off, gets on base, and scores runs for the Orioles who have one of the higher over/unders today. Hutchison has had his days but he’s been awful lately struggling to keep anyone off the basepaths allowing a .800 OPS to lefties.

1.107 0.000 $2,900 $8,450 $4,400 $52,800 $6,500 $8,450

Chris Davis

Davis is so cheap because he’s been so bad lately and it’s looking more and more like his season last season was somewhat of a fluke. Hutchison has been horrid against lefties and if Davis is really going to get it together, this would be the time. He still has his homer power and Rogers Centre is one of the most homer-friendly parks. He’s facing a pitcher who is really struggling and he hit one out last night so the confidence could be returning here.
