Daily Batter Breakdown: Wed, Jul 9th

Welcome to the Daily Batter Breakdown. Each day, with at least 8 games on the night slate, I’ll breakdown some of the best top tier hitters to target based on matchup. The biggest split taken into account will be left/right, but each player card will also show park factors, player salaries and then a description of why I’ll be targeting him. Be sure to check out the FAQ for more information on specific stats.

I apologize for the lack of articles recently, but I have refocused and will be posting these up every night when there is a large slate the next night again. Finally a night without a Coors Field game and a night with a lot of solid matchups and decent options all over the place which should make for a good 2nd night in the Survive and Revive. There are a couple of Aces on the mound in Sale and Darvish but both are pitching in hitter’s parks and aren’t slam dunk options either. It should be an interesting night.

Brian McCann

I am thinking that McCann has finally gotten it together this year. He’s been really bad for some reason throughout the year and his 5 game hit streak has really raised hopes in the Bronx. Tomlin was god in one game where he struck out 11 and had a CGSO but the other 3 games sandwiching that were 5 ER bombs. Tomlin just hasn’t been good, especially at home where he has a 5.45 ERA.

Lyle Overbay

If you want to save money tonight at first base, which might be a good idea, I really like Overbay. The Brewers are actually my favorite hitting team of the night against Roberto Hernandez who is a guarantee to give up at least 2 runs and a pretty poor WHIP. All of the Brewers lefties are in play today and the fact that Overbay is an experienced hitter in a hitter’s park against a poor right hander makes him a solid punt play.

Scooter Gennett

Gennett had a night last night and should be in the lineup again today against the righty Hernandez. I talked a little bit about why I didn’t like him above but I also don’t like him because in the last 3 years he’s allowed a .857 OPS to left handed batters. Gennett has done his damage against righties with a .884 OPS and should be hitting at the top of the lineup.

0.933 0.992 $3,500 $4,899 $8,150 $4,200 $58,400 $6,900 $8,300

Carlos Santana

The McCarthy signing was fun because I didn’t really understand it. He hasn’t been good against left handed hitting and lefties excel at Yankee Stadium. He has been a little bit homer prone this year as well and even though Santana has struggled mightily this year I think he might be able to capitalize on McCarthy at home. I really don’t like too many 3rd basemen today and I think Santana will bring the upside and will also have the low owned % required to win a GPP.

0.931 0.967 $2,800 $5,466 $7,550 $3,000 $56,000 $6,000 $7,600

Sean RodriguezSean-Rod has been really good in the last couple of weeks posting a 1.404 OPS and also putting a bunch of extra-base hits in there. He’s extremely cheap across the industry right now and faces Ventura today who is solid, but I still like Rodriguez at the shortstop position if he’s eligibile there. I’m really not high on any other shortstops and Rodriguez has been solid with a .788 OPS against righties this year. He is not going to cost you a lot but has some large upside as the Rays have got it together recently.

0.991 0.957 $3,500 $6,044 $7,550 $3,600 $68,400 $5,900 $7,250

Michael Saunders

Saunders has to be the king of the solo home run as whenever I look at him that is all he is hitting. Gibson has been terrible recently and hasn’t been good against lefties so he could have heaps of trouble against this Mariners lineup tonight if they are feeling up to par. Saunders is solid against right handers and the Mariners are heavy favorites in this game.

0.933 0.992 $3,900 $9,088 $9,450 $4,500 $96,300 $9,100 $9,400

Michael Brantley

Brantley continues to produce, and this game makes 5 games in a row with multi hits. Hitters on a hot streak mean something to me, but only if the matchup supports it and this one against McCarthy does. He should be able to continue his hot hitting against the Yankees at home today especially because of what I said of McCarthy above and Brantley’s solid performance against right handers.

0.892 0.939 $4,800 $7,762 $12,000 $5,600 $89,400 $9,600 $12,350

Andrew McCutchen

I heard rumblings regarding doubts about McCutchen during his slow start this year but rumors of his demise were greatly exaggerated. He’s always crushed left handers but he’s also good against right handers and I still like him for the price today against Lynn. I would only use him in a GPP however because of the fact that Lynn is a total Jekyll and Hyde pitcher and could be awful or great and that the Pirates seem to be Jekyll and Hyde themselves. I still don’t mind his price and think he won’t be highly owned today.

0.960 1.056 $4,000 $8,551 $11,700 $5,100 $84,800 $9,200 $12,500

Jose Abreu

If I have anyone to pick for a homer tonight it has to be Abreu. He has an amazing record against right handed pitching this year (a .958 OPS) and has hit 20 HR off of right handed pitchers. De La Rosa hasn’t had too much exposure to any one player but has allowed a .715 OPS to righties which is worse than the .495 he’s allowed to lefties. Abreu should have a field day today even against the green monster.

Robinson Cano

I mentioned above how I really like the lefties of Seattle against Gibson, and I may end up using a lot of them. Cano has had a very quiet season as he started out really quiet but has really came on and been very consistent. The homers aren’t there but he’s a great cash game play as he puts himself in good hitting positions every day.
