Daily Batter Breakdown: Wed, May 28th
Welcome to the Daily Batter Breakdown. Each day, with at least 8 games on the night slate, I’ll breakdown some of the best top tier hitters to target based on matchup. The biggest split taken into account will be left/right, but each player card will also show park factors, player salaries and then a description of why I’ll be targeting him. Be sure to check out the FAQ for more information on specific stats.
This should be called Survivor Wednesday as you have the 2 survivors on FanDuel running tonight along with the 2nd round of the Survivor Big Score on Draftstreet. This is all going to be about finding you the value cash game bats so you can afford Kershaw who should be the safest play out there at pitcher tonight with so much trash taking the mound.

Miguel Montero
Montero has been awful in the last couple of weeks and his price has dropped as such. He still holds a pretty nice .844 OPS this season against right handed pitching while his numbers against lefties is awful. It’s a good thing he’s facing a right hander in Stauffer tonight then. Stauffer isn’t a newbie to the league and hasn’t been great in his time as a major league pitcher as supported by the 9.5 vegas over/under that currently plagues this game. I like Parra and Montero tonight for the DBacks and think that Montero busts out of his slump.

Eric Hosmer
The Royals are again a big disappointment in that they haven’t found the super prospect that was supposed to carry them to victory. Instead, they have found a bunch of OK major leaguers that can win some games but don’t have that ‘umph’ to get over the top. Hosmer has really nice numbers against right handed pitching including a .300 batting average and plays Cosart in Kauffman today. Vegas doesn’t like Cosart and I’m inclined to agree as the young pitcher has a pretty nasty 1.5 WHIP recently. Hosmer bats in the middle of the Royals lineup and is one of their only bright spots so if you’re playing the early games look to Hosmer to make some value.

Gordon Beckham
I really hate to recommend him and everyone may look at this and be surprised however there are some numbers this year that really back up Beckham in this game. First of all, he’s really cheap so he isn’t going to break the bank. Next, the White Sox are -108 with a game total of 9 so this should be a fairly high scoring game. T.J. House is a green major league pitcher who Vegas doesn’t think too highly of and Beckham has finally figured out how to hit major league pitching. In fact, he’s been great against lefties this year with a .481 batting average and 1.274 OPS. Don’t sleep on this guy tonight at 2nd base.

Trevor Plouffe
Oh, Joe Saunders, how I enjoy you pitching in the majors. If you’ve ever read any of my articles when Saunders takes the mound you know that I like to pick any right hander that takes the mound against him. It has actually been quite profitable in the last 3 years as he’s allowed a .871 OPS with 66 HR and basically allows any right hander to hit him hard. Plouffe has had a couple of great years hitting against right handed pitching and not even Kyle Gibson pitching can make the Twins a dog tonight. Load up those Twins righties in cash games and like it.

Everth Cabrera
I have been waiting for this guy to break out all year and maybe it’s finally coming. He’s leading off for the Padres now and is still in a projected high scoring game against Chase Anderson. Anderson has been solid but Vegas still really thinks he’s ready to get blown up and I think the resurgent Cabrera could have something to do with that. Everth is cheap across the industry and has finally been getting his hitting legs under him. The Padres aren’t a popular pick which could lead Cabrera to be a solid GPP SS play tonight.

Josh Willingham
Basically read what I said above about Saunders; the guy isn’t very good at throwing baseballs past right handed hitters. Willingham is back in the Twins lineup finally and even though he hasn’t been doing much he has the power to go deep and Saunders should provide batting practice and just what he needs to launch one tonight. I’m taking advantage of his cheap price and calling a homer tonight.

Michael Brantley
The Indians lineup is kind of sad right now with Swisher and Santana both hitting the DL, but they still have some of the guys who have been producing like Brantley. I have always been a fan of him even though I’m a Tigers fan and it’s nice to see him put it all together this year and hit for a .900 OPS. Noesi isn’t a very good pitcher and I wouldn’t sleep on the Indians tonight even without a couple of their big names as it’s really been the other guys doing the damage recently. Vegas has this one pegged as one of the top scoring games of the night as well.

Carlos Quentin
Quentin seems to get lost in the shuffle of things when talking about the Padres but the real deal is that when he’s in the lineup, he hits. Chase Anderson is a decent starter but doesn’t bring a ton of stuff to the table as evidenced by the SD/Ari game being almost a pick-em tonight. Quentin’s numbers in a small sample are video game like as his OPS is above one in basically every category, OBP is above .400 and his wOBA is at absurd levels. Granted, it’s a small sample but against Anderson tonight and his affordable price I really don’t see much downside.

David DeJesus
Oh Liam Hendriks, I don’t know how you really shut down the Athletics the other night. I’m still not convinced that Hendriks is any good, especially while playing in The Rogers Centre. I’m going to take the bargain plays today and try to fit the lefty Rays in my lineup which shouldn’t be hard considering their struggles recently. Hendriks has a miserable career WHIP and ERA and has allowed literally everyone to tee off on him. I will imagine DeJesus will get the leadoff spot tonight and what makes him so appealing is he is finally coming on and really hits right handers well. I really like his upside for the price.

Shin-Soo Choo
If the Twins get to hit against Saunders and they aren’t a huge favorite, that means that Kyle Gibson is on the mound. If you want a GPP pitcher to target, he’s the one. He’s either great or terrible and is a great pitcher to stack against in the hopes that he will implode. You really never know what you’re gonna get and the guys that have the most success off him are the lefties like Choo who are hitting .295 with a .762 OPS. The Rangers are decimated right now but still have some lefty power that they can use and I really like Choo and Leonys Martin tonight as well.
