Daytona 500 Weather Report and Forecast: Rain Likely Hits the Brakes on Racing

Article Image
Racing weather is uniquely fragile in that while most sports will just play through some rain, NASCAR not only needs to stop for any rain, but also can’t resume until the track is fully dry. This presents some problems when the forecast is showing repeated heavy rains, which is exactly what we could see in Daytona this weekend.

Below, we’ll break down the weather reports for the Daytona 500

Daytona 500 Daytona, FL

Weather Report the Daytona 500

Editor’s Note: This event has been rescheduled to 4:00 PM EST on Monday (2/19).

The forecast for the Xfinity Series on Saturday isn’t great, dealing with off-and-on scattered showers, but it’s certainly better than for the main event on Sunday. By Sunday, I’m expecting widespread heavy rain throughout the day, and I think it’s unlikely we will see any significant breaks in the rain that would give us enough time to fully dry the track and get to racing. I think the odds of a race being completed on Sunday are low. For more info, you can follow me on Twitter, @KevinRothWx.
