A wild Sunday of Week 12 NFL football will conclude with a primetime matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football. Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock from SoFi Stadium.
Ahead of kickoff, oddsmakers have priced the Eagles as 3-point road favorites on the spread. The total is set at 49 points.
Let’s take a deeper look at the matchup to see where NFL bettors can find value at sportsbooks.
According to Evan Abrams of The Action Network, Sunday Night Football unders are 37-18 (67%) since 2022, including 34-13 during the regular season. This year, the under is 8-3 in Sunday Night Football games.
Philadelphia Eagles Preview
Smith ruled OUT for Sunday Night Football
WR DeVonta Smith is the only player that the Eagles have ruled out ahead of kickoff this evening against the Rams. Smith leads Philadelphia with 41 receptions this season and 4 receiving touchdowns, making him a significant loss for this offense.
The good news for Philadelphia fans is that the Eagles have been much less reliant on the passing game in recent weeks than they were at the beginning of the season. Since Week 6, the Eagles lead the entire NFL with a 61.9% rush rate, 8.3% higher than any other team in the league during that stretch.
The bad news for Eagles’ fans is that the Rams have one of the better run defenses in the NFL, ranking 4th in EPA/play and 2nd in success rate since Week 6. This will be a classic case of “best on best” when these two teams meet at SoFi Stadium.
Eagles defense flying high since bye week
From Week 1 to Week 4, Philadelphia’s defense ranked 28th in EPA/play and 20th in success rate. Since their Week 5 bye, the Eagles’ defense has looked like a completely different unit, ranking 1st in EPA/play and 1st in success rate.
Rookie CB Quinyon Mitchell has been a big reason for Philadelphia’s improvements against the pass. Entering play in Week 12, Mitchell ranks 19th out of 111 players at his position in coverage grade, per PFF. He leads all rookie cornerbacks with 8 pass breakups and ranks 10th among all cornerbacks in the entire NFL in passer rating allowed when targeted. Mitchell has a tough test tonight against one of the better wide receiving corps in the league, but his recent production has shown that he’s likely up for the challenge.
Los Angeles Rams Preview
What to expect from Stafford, Rams offense
Los Angeles is 4-1 since their Week 7 bye, but their wins haven’t come against the best of competition. They have defeated the 2-8 Raiders, 3-9 Patriots, and have taken advantage of a pair of slumping potential playoff teams in the Vikings and Seahawks.
Even still, Matthew Stafford ranks only 13th in EPA/play during that time period and 14th in yards per attempt. Notably, he ranks 23rd in turnover-worthy play rate across his last 5 games, with 4 interceptions being a red flag heading into the homestretch of the regular season. Stafford will have arguably his toughest test of the season tonight when he lines up across from Philadelphia’s surging secondary unit.
Can Rams’ run defense hold up tonight against Eagles’ potent ground attack?
The Rams’ run defense has quietly emerged as one of the league’s best units over the last month of action. Going backwards, they have held Rhamondre Stevenson to 3.7 yards per carry, Devon Achane to 3.1 yards per carry, Kenneth Walker to 3.3 yards per carry, and Aaron Jones to 3.1 yards per carry.
If Los Angeles can slow down Philadelphia’s run game tonight, they could have a great chance to keep this contest competitive. The Eagles have become one of the run-heaviest offenses in the NFL this season, and the absence of WR DeVonta Smith is only likely to make life more difficult for them in the passing game.
Eagles vs. Rams Prediction
There is little doubt that Philadelphia has the more talented roster in this matchup, but Los Angeles matches up really well. The Eagles have had the most success this season when they have been able to rely on their ground game, led by the potential Offensive Player of the Year in Saquon Barkley. If Philadelphia is forced into a pass-heavier game plan this evening, it could spell trouble for Jalen Hurts and company. The home underdogs are more than capable of pulling an upset.
PICK: Rams +3 (-112, DraftKings)
