Golf Betting Picks: 2019 Sanderson Farms Championship

Article Image

Talk about a perfect start the 2019-20 PGA Tour season. Heading into the weekend we had online sports betting sites surrounded with our golf betting picks at the Greenbrier. At the start of round three, Joaquin Niemann (30-1), Scottie Scheffler (40-1), and Robbie Shelton (260-1) were all tied for first place. Ultimately, it was Niemann who would walk away with his first PGA Tour victory, smashing the field by six strokes and cashing out 30-1 golf betting tickets. Scheffler and Shelton both finished T7.

With the Greenbrier behind us, the Tour heads south to Jackson, Mississippi for the 2019 Sanderson Farms Championship.

Course Preview – Country Club of Jackson

The Country Club of Jackson is a Par 72 course stretching over 7,400 yards. There are six holes between 400-450 yards and the longest Par 5 is 612 yards. The easiest three holes on the course are three of the four par 5s, so golfers will need to take advantage of these birdie opportunities if they want to contend come Sunday.

Since the Country Club of Jackson began hosting the tournament in 2014, the majority of approach shots take place between 125-150 yards, but golfers will see a wide variety of distances between 100-200 yards — there’s not really one distance we should be targeting.

Like last week, we want to target good ball strikers and hopefully they’ll bring out a hot putter through their four rounds. We can expect the winning score to be right around 20-under.

Golf Betting Picks — Favorites at the Sanderson Championship

Well, we won’t be targeting Joaquin Niemann this week. Niemann’s odds have plummeted to +1200 following his dominant win at the Greenbrier, making him the odds-on the favorite to win the 2019 Sanderson Farms Championship.

Below Niemann, you’ll find Brandt Snedeker +1800, Byeong Hun An +2000, Sunjae Im +2100, Scottie Scheffler +2200, and Lucas Glover +2500. I don’t have a lot of interest at the top of the betting board as I think there’s much better value in mid-tier and long shot odds this week.

If I do decide to go with someone here, I’ll likely go with Glover or stick with Scheffler. As we touched on last week , Scheffler is fully exempt for the 2019-20 season after finishing with the most points at the end of the Korn Ferry Tour season (formerly known as the Web.com Tour). Scheffler started his rookie year off on a good note with a T7 at the Greenbrier.

Golf Betting Picks — Mid-tier Odds at the Greenbrier

Enough with the favorites – this is where I plan on attacking. Here are the golfers I’ll be betting.

Emiliano Grillo +4000 – This will be Grillo’s first time at the Sanderson Championship. Grillo didn’t have a superb 2018-19 season on Tour, but he was a cut-making machine, including cuts made in three of the four majors. Sure, Grillo missed the cut in two of his last three tournaments, but the 27-year-old Argentinian enters the week after a 5-week break. The time off should be beneficial. We know he has the ball-striking ability. The question is, will enough putts fall?

Corey Conners +4500 – Next up is Corey Conners, who actually finished runner-up here last year. Much like Grillo, Conners excels everywhere but around and on the green. Relative to this week’s 156-man field, Conners is no. 2 in strokes gained tee-to-green, no. 1 in ball-striking, no. 1 strokes gained off-the-tee, and no. 2 in strokes gained approach. Conners finished the 2018-19 season with three straight Top 25s, including a T7 at the BMW Championship

Ryan Armour +7000 (use our PointsBet promo code to get these odds) – Armour already has a win under his belt at the Country Club of Jackson back in 2017. Armour didn’t come close to winning in 2018, but he finished his season off strong before missing the cut at the Greenbrier. The missed cut is worrisome, but +6500 at PointsBet is a solid price for a past winner. At other online sports betting sites he’s as low as +5000.

Aaron Wise +6000 (use our DraftKings Sportsbook promo code to get these odds) – It’s been over a year since Wise won his first PGA tournament, but don’t be surprised if he makes a push at a victory this week. Wise is a birdie machine and will take advantage of the four Par 5s in Jackson. The Oregon alumn is one of the more talented golfers in this field and we’re getting good value at +6000 at DraftKings. Wise is down to +4800 at FanDuel.

Golf Betting Picks — Long shot Odds at the Sanderson Farms Championship

Adam Long +17500 (DK) – Adam Long found himself in contention at the Greenbrier but he couldn’t overcome losing nearly 4.5 strokes on the green. Long did gain 11 strokes tee-to-green, helping him earn a T14. If he can hit the ball like that this week and put his putter on the right path, we could be cashing a long shot ticket on Sunday.

Tyler McCumber +20000 (PB) – McCumber is one of the golfers who found enough success on the Korn Ferry Tour to play in a few PGA Tour events during its fall swing. He drives the ball far and can stay in the fairway, as he showed hitting nearly 70% of fairways at the Greenbrier. He’ll need to tighten up his approach game to stand a chance, but I’ll have small bet on McCumber at 200-1.
