headChopper Wins $4,000 + Courtside Tix on DraftDay!

headChopper and Little Chop

Last night one of RotoGrinders most prominent members, headChopper , had a huge night on DraftDay. The #12 Overall Ranked Grinder took down not only the $10,000 Guaranteed High Society, but also the Clippers Courtside freeroll, besting an astoundingly large field of over 10,000 combined players. After investing $40 into the event, the take-home purse wound up being $4,000 in cash and two courtside tickets to see the Clippers take on the Rockets out in L.A.! We’re proud of the Chopper-abi, as he’s been writing for RotoGrinders and been active in the forums since almost Day 1. After his big win on Wednesday night we got a chance to ask him a few questions about the win, here’s what he had to say:

headChopper Discusses Winning $4,000 + Courtside Clippers Tix in One Night

How are you feeling right now?

I am feeling real good. It’s always nice to go into a Thursday night off with no NBA games with a big win under your belt. This win just happens to be a little bigger than most.

Last night the DD chat was going off, the forums were talking, all talking about your lineups. Were you watching Live? What was sweating the event like?

I wasn’t paying attention to the chat, but when my TV shows were done I started watching some NBA. I saw I had a chance to do well, but I was kicking myself for some last minute moves I made on another site that were costing me a GPP. I saw I needed a few more out of Gay and I really didn’t think he was going to stay in the game long enough to get it. But my boy, Coach Hollins, kept him in there long enough to snag 2 boards and 2 FT’s and a nice win for team chopper.

What was your strategy heading into both events? What players were you keying in on? What players did you feel the least confident about?

Winning Lineup 2

I was using the same strategy that I use every other day. Just try to put out a high scoring team and hope you catch a couple breaks. Some of the guys I was keying on all sites were Russell Westbrook, Kobe Bryant, Rudy Gay and Chris Kaman. I really liked Serge Ibaka, but to a lesser degree. And of course, for the price, I had to have Ty Lawson on most of those DD teams. There were a few stars out there I wanted to avoid. I didn’t want any part of Kevin Durant or Dwyane Wade. And I had zero desire to play DeMarcus Cousins after I read about him texting a picture of his junk to a girl. That was probably the biggest break of the night. Not having any part of that goofball on any team.So while I agree that it was pretty bad luck if you had him on your team, strategically I made a decision to avoid that time bomb when the news was coming in that day and it paid off.

C’mon, you poisoned DeMarcus Cousins food, right? You can tell us. Also, did you notice if anyone would have topped you had Cousins (or maybe T-Mac) had actually played?

I didn’t check on a DeMarcus team catching me. I feel for guys who started Cousins and got burned. It’s happened to me plenty in the past and will happen more times in the future. But I made a conscious decision not to play him after the whole Wiener-Gate news broke earlier. He is an odd guy and is still a kid. He has great potential, but is a serious risk whenever bad news stories come out like this.

As for T-MAC, I knew before they even broke any news that he was going to be super limited or not play at all. Bad knee that acted up last week and a back-to-back are disastrous for that guy. When they said Joe Johnson and Willie Green were out, I knew T-Mac wouldn’t get many minutes an that the only guy who could get a little extra run was Jerry Stackhouse. It paid off. Listen, I am about to drop some knowledge for every new player out there right now, and this advice is on the house: NEVER play TMac in the 2nd of back to back games and NEVER play Cousins when he just got busted exposing his privates to some chick.

Wise words from the Chopper-Abi, per usual. How about some tips on scoring. How did you adjust your NBA picks when you play on DraftDay with their scoring system?

I didn’t. The oddest scoring system is DraftStreet. I may make minor adjustments there. But not with any other site. Just play your guys and don’t worry about a small difference in scoring.

I know your a native-Texan – are you pumped to go watch your Rockets play in LA? Who are you bringing with you on the trip? What are you going to do while you’re in LA?

I ♥ the Rockets!! That was the first thing that caught my eye on the promo was Clippers/Rockets game. The money was a bonus. If we decide to make the trip I will be taking my lovely wife. Maybe while I am in LA I can catch a live episode of “The Voice”

How can the Grinders find you on TV for the game? Are you going to wear something that stands out? Maybe bring a sign?

Easy answer to this one, Just look for the shirt that reads “HeadChopper” across the front. It’s my lucky shirt and I just happened to be wearing it last night!!

What are your plans for the rest of Daily Fantasy for NBA season and as we approach MLB?

Play til’ I can’t play no more! I like to ride out each sport to the end and not mess around with the new sport until there is nothing else to squeeze out of the old sport. So while most guys are playing MLB, I’ll still be grinding NBA and playoffs while keeping an eye on MLB. Then when NBA is all dried up I’ll get started on some baseball. I am still looking for a free trip to the ESPY’s. I just want to finish strong.
