2023 Masters Weather Forecast: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly

We’re just hours away from golfers teeing off at Augusta National on Thursday, but thanks to a rainy Masters weather forecast, we may not get a winner until Monday.

The last time golf fans endured a postponement at Augusta? 1983.

That’s right. For 40 consecutive years, The Masters has finished on time and a Green Jacket has been taken out of the closet on Sunday. But that streak is in jeopardy, and it’s not just impatient golf fans like myself who will suffer the consequences.

The conditions will certainly play a role in determining this week’s champion. After all, even Tiger Woods’ own caddie Joe LaCava is bearish on Woods’ chances if rain forces a 27-hole day upon the five-time Masters winner.

RotoGrinders Chief Meteorologist Kevin Roth has been keeping tabs on the Masters weather forecast all week and will continue to do so through Sunday (or Monday if necessary).

2023 Masters Weather Forecast

Again, bookmark Kevin Roth’s weather report and stay on top of golf weather not only during the Masters but throughout the rest of the season.

With that said, let’s go over the good, the bad and the ugly of this year’s Masters weather forecast.

The Good: Thursday

The 2023 Masters should start out rather smoothly. Weather doesn’t look to be an issue on Thursday, and all golfers should be able to get their first round in without any problems.

The Bad: Friday

Rain is likely to arrive at some point on Friday, but the question is what time and will it impact play? Should it come in early and cause delays, then those teeing off in the afternoon may have a tough time finishing a full round.

The Ugly: Saturday

My jealousy quickly turned into sympathy for a friend who is flying out to Augusta on Friday and only has a Saturday ticket. Conditions can’t look much worse, as there’s a very real chance that Saturday turns into a total wash.

Masters Weather Impact for DFS and Betting

So what does all of this mean for golf betting and PGA DFS purposes? Do the impending weather conditions hurt certain golfers and help others?

“How weather impacts golfers should be taken on a case-by-case basis, but cold weather is typically bad for older golfers and golfers that are dealing with nagging injuries,” PGA DFS analyst Derek Farnsworth (aka Notorious) told me. “ A couple of names that come to mind are Tiger Woods and Matt Fitzpatrick. I’m too big of a Tiger homer to trust my own advice, but he would certainly prefer it to be 80 degrees and sunny.”

“As far as the wind goes, I think it helps the European/Australian golfers that grew up playing in difficult conditions. The wind hurts golfers that aren’t good around the greens. You have to scramble to play well at Augusta and these greens are going to be even tougher to hit with strong wind in the forecast.”

How about AM/PM tee times, might either wave have an advantage?

“Rain is the biggest weather issue for The Masters, and the potential for a rain delay is highest Saturday. Wind-wise there’s nothing really jumping off the page, but a Thursday PM / Friday AM golfer will get slightly lighter winds on both days,” said Roth.
