MLB Daily Grind Down May 13th

The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit.
While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries. The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time. (any fp listed uses Fanduel’s scoring system)
Monday is always a letdown after the great GPP action you get from the weekend. With nine games going, there is still plenty of action to be had. Anibal Sanchez gets my nod as player of the day today as he goes against the K-happy Houston Astros. There are no must plays in baseball but he is as close to that as possible with the shortened schedule of games. Here is today’s Daily Grind Down to get you ready for tonight’s games.

Pitchers
- Home A.J. Burnett is on some kind of run. He has yet to give up more than 3 ER in a start this year and has K’d at least 6 batters in those starts, also. He brings into this matchup a nice 2.57 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with 66 Ks on the year. MIL is batting only .234 on the road, .288 versus right-handers, and .271 over the last 7 days. The numbers favor MIL slightly. In Play
- Away Marco Estrada last two starts have been bad. He has run into trouble at home where he is allowing opponents to bat .345 vs. him. He has been sharp on the road with a 2.79 ERA and a .233 BAA. His K/9 totals are high so he is playable. PIT is batting .256 at home, .255 versus right-handers, and .269 over the last 7 days. He has held the current Pirates to a .212 BAA. In Play
Batters
- Home Andrew McCutchen has been hot of late producing 20.75 FP over the last week. He is 7-19 with 2 HRs versus Estrada and loves batting at home. Garrett Jones is producing and has the splits in his favor today but the BvP numbers are not there for him.
- Away Jean Segura has been very hot over the last week producing 29.5 FP. Ryan Braun is 6-14 versus Burnett. Carlos Gomez and Norichika Aoki have positive BvPs as well.

HOU BvP | HOU vs R | DET BvP | DET vs R | ||||
| Note: Batter Splits Above Open in Pop Up Window | |||||||
Las Vegas
- OU 8
- Favored DET -300
Pitchers
- Home Anibal Sanchez could have another 17 K night against the Astros tonight. DET is favored at -300 which is the highest total I have seen all year. This is one of those circumstances where you know everyone is going to have a player but there is no way you can avoid taking him. HOU is batting .272 on the road, .232 versus right-handers, and .237 over the last 7 days. Target
- Away Bud Norris home a road splits are drastic. He is a 5.93 pitcher on the road and DET is a much better hitting team at home. The splits do not favor him today but I probably would not suggest him even if they did. DET is batting .311 at home, .284 versus right-handers, and .286 over the last 7 days with 10 HRs. Avoid
Batters
- Home Johnny Peralta has been hot producing 24.75 fp over the last 7 days. He is a cheap option at SS. Every Tiger is playable today and I might even be tempted to stack because Norris has been so bad on the road. Prince Fielder looks to be in a good spot to produce if he plays.
- Away The Astros have 381 Ks on the year. If you like losing points from your hitters then fire away.
NY Mets at St. Louis
| NY Mets | St. Louis | ||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Busch Stadium | 7:05 PM | ||||||
| Jeremy Hefner – (0-4), 4.63 ERA, 6.43 K/9, 1.26 WHIP | Lance Lynn – (5-1), 2.72 ERA, 9.84 K/9, 1.05 WHIP | ||||||
| PvB | (2-4 H/AB) 0.5 BA-A, 25 K%, 1.75 OPS-A | PvB | (3-20 H/AB) 0.15 BA-A, 15 K%, 0.5 OPS-A | ||||
| ROAD | (0-2), 6.75 ERA, 4 HRA, 8.3 K/9, 1.25 WHIP | HOME | (3-0), 1.35 ERA, 0 HRA, 10.8 K/9, 0.85 WHIP | ||||

NYM BvP | NYM vs R | STL BvP | STL vs R | ||||
| Note: Batter Splits Above Open in Pop Up Window | |||||||
Las Vegas
- OU 7.5
- Favored STL -200
Pitchers
- Home Lance Lynn is a huge favorite at home in a game with a low OU. He is an instant target because of those factors alone. His home ERA is a dominant 1.35 and he has held the current NYM to a .150 BAA. NYM is batting .252 on the road, .229 versus right-handers, and .211 over the last 7 days. Target
- Away Jeremy Hefner has not pitched as bad as the numbers might suggest. The Ks and WHIP are there for Hefner and he will make a sneaky GPP play soon.
The Mets have lost every game he has started, though, and a matchup versus Lance Lynn at home is not the best place to get sneaky. STL is batting .262 at home, .274 versus right-handers and .286 over the last 7 days. Avoid
Batters
- Home The Cardinals have been getting it done as a team. Each night it is a new player who steps up for them. That makes them all playable but none of them worth suggesting. There is no BvP data but Hefner seems to unravel at the worst possible times so STL could hang him for a decent amount of runs.
- Away NYM have been slumping and Lynn is super tough at home. Look elsewhere unless you really like to gamble.
Colorado at Chicago Cubs

| Juan Nicasio – (3-0), 4.72 ERA, 6.6 K/9, 1.4 WHIP | Travis Wood – (3-2), 2.33 ERA, 6.64 K/9, 0.93 WHIP | ||||||
| PvB | (2-9 H/AB) 0.222 BA-A, 33.33 K%, 0.667 OPS-A | PvB | (2-24 H/AB) 0.083 BA-A, 25 K%, 0.333 OPS-A | ||||
| ROAD | (2-0), 4.5 ERA, 3 HRA, 5.4 K/9, 1.55 WHIP | HOME | (1-2), 2.57 ERA, 1 HRA, 6.4 K/9, 1.071 WHIP | ||||

COL BvP | COL vs L | CHC BvP | CHC vs R | ||||
| Note: Batter Splits Above Open in Pop Up Window | |||||||
Las Vegas
- OU 8
- Favored CHC -120
Pitchers
- Home Travis Woods is flat getting it done this year. He has a 2.33 ERA and 0.93 WHIP on the season but no one seems to know about him because he plays for the Cubs, which is great for us. COL is batting .258 on the road, .277 versus left-handers, and only .181 over the last 7 days. Woods has held them to a 0.83 BAA. In Play
- Away Juan Nicasio has been solid on the year all things considered. A matchup against the Cubs could be a nice spot to use him since he will be cheap and has pitched well at times this year away from COL. I like him as a value play on a multiple pitcher site. CHC is batting .273 at home, .246 versus right-handed pitching and .271 over the last 7 days. In Play
Batters
- Home Anthony Rizzo has been the hottest Cub producing 22.5 over the last 7 days and he gains the splits in his favor today. Nate Schierholtz gains those same splits and has positive BvPs but in a very small sample size.
- Away Right now it looks like the wind will be blowing out at about 10 MPH in a direction that helps right-handed power. COL has been cold and no one has good numbers against Wood but sometimes the situation dictates your decision and not the numbers.
