Covering the Bases: Saturday, May 6

STLCardinals84, one of the best tournament players in the game, is here to cover the bases for the upcoming MLB DFS slate. Whether you are looking for the top pitchers or the best stacks, Cards has you covered with an extensive deep dive into his MLB DFS picks.
Happy Saturday, Grinders! We have the usual split slate Saturday on tap for today, and both the FD and DK slates mirror one another today. It’s always a relief when that happens, as it makes it easier to break down for all of you. There are just four games on the afternoon slate, which starts at 2:15 PM ET. We then have eight games on the main evening slate.
This should be an interesting day of baseball, so let’s get right down to business with some of my favorite MLB DFS picks for this Saturday! Have a great weekend everyone!

(NOTE – All statistical references for pitchers now show 2023 season data).

Drew Rasmussen vs. Yankees
Drew Smyly vs. Marlins
Tylor Megill vs. Rockies
Adam Wainwright vs. Tigers
Domingo German vs. Rays
This is a pretty underwhelming slate for pitching. We have no aces on the mound, though Rasmussen showed some signs of potentially being top-level a year ago. Here’s a quick look at the 2023 data for these hurlers:
Rasmussen – 3.66 ERA, 3.37 xFIP, 26% K, 7% BB
Smyly – 2.83 ERA, 4.53 xFIP, 21% K, 4% BB
Megill – 4.11 ERA, 5.45 xFIP, 17% K, 11% BB
Wainwright – (2022 data) 3.71 ERA, 4.10 xFIP, 18% K, 7% BB
German – 4.46 ERA, 3.63 xFIP, 29% K, 7% BB
First of all, I am not touching Wainwright. He didn’t look great in his minor league rehab assignment. The Cardinals are a hot mess right now. He’s 41 years old. It’s his first start of the year. It’s not like he brings any strikeout upside to the table. Even against the Tigers, I’m out on Waino today.
Rasmussen is clearly the best option on the board. The question becomes whether or not it is worth it to pay $10,200 for him on FD and $10,300 for him on DK against the Yankees. While the Yankees aren’t healthy and don’t have their “A” lineup right now, I just don’t think that is the move on this slate. I am not going to argue against anyone for playing him, though.
