Happy Sunday, Grinders! We have the usual Sunday slate on tap for us today, with ten games available on the main slate. It’s a bit of a weird slate, as we have three or four “opener” / bullpen game situations. The pitching pool is a little shallow this afternoon. Alas, everyone is dealing with the same player pool — so perhaps we can make some lemonade out of lemons on this hot Sunday.

It’s pretty barren at the top for pitching today, especially when you consider what we have had to choose from over the past two days. Hey, we can’t have aces every day! Here’s a look at the 2023 data for these four hurlers:
Luzardo – 3.34 ERA, 3.57 xFIP, 28% K, 6% BB
Nola – 4.27 ERA, 3.81 xFIP, 25% K, 6% BB
Ober – 2.74 ERA, 4.38 xFIP, 24% K, 5% BB
Giolito – 3.96 ERA, 4.39 xFIP, 25% K, 8% BB
I’ll make it clear from the jump that Jesus Luzardo is my favorite pitching option on this slate, and it’s not particularly close. His 28% strikeout rate is 3% higher than any other pitcher in the top tier today. He also benefits from a matchup against a Rockies team that ranks 28th in team wOBA and 3rd in strikeout rate in road games this year; they essentially cannot hit away from Coors Field. Luzardo will also be asked to play the “stopper” role today, as the Marlins are riding an eight game losing streak. I think he gets it done with a dominant performance, and his overall profile makes him one of the best pitchers in the league that nobody talks about in the national media.
