Who is your favorite pitcher (when considering price, matchup, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?
stlcardinals84: Spencer Schwellenbach – Our early ownership projections have Bryan Woo and Robbie Ray with 6-7x the ownership of Schwellenbach, and I’ll gladly use that to my advantage. While Schwellenbach has a tough matchup against the Mets, he is capable of being a matchup-proof arm. He has an elite strikeout to walk ratio with a 2.92 xFIP on the season, and his 13% SwStr% suggests that he should even see some improvement on the strikeout front. He’s a great risk/reward option as a pivot away from Woo and Ray. I will note that we do have to monitor the MLB weather here, with Roth having this game at YELLOW/ORANGE early in the day.
headChopper: Robbie Ray – I can understand the hesitancy in rostering Ray if he’s going to be chalk, but I don’t think this is the same pitcher we’ve seen in years past. Not to mention, Cleveland has a slate-low implied run total and is going from an average park for hitters to possibly the best park for pitchers in the majors, which helps Ray quite a bit. If we’re looking for reasons why he might be different this year, although the velocity on his fastball is down slightly, he’s ditched much of his slider usage in favor of a new changeup that helps hide the velocity dip. He’s been chalky for most of this year and has really only had one bad outing. He has the type of strikeout ability to be the best pitcher on this slate, and I’m willing to eat a little chalk to get there.
Dean78904: Robbie Ray – Ray had a hiccup last time out in Coors Field, but prior to that he was, gasp, wildly consistent as Robbie racked up at least 22.5 DK points in 8 straight games. Ray has an appealing K rate (28.1%) and thanks in part to his home field he has done a great job keeping the ball in the park (.66 HR/9). Aside from Jose Ramirez the Guardians active roster are pretty punchless vs LHPs (25th vs LHPs) and they are pretty middle of the road in most other categories – 17th wRC+, 17th BB%, 18th K%, and 18th wOBA.
