Happy Monday! We have an interesting 10-game slate, where things look extremely muddled on the hitting side. Even on the pitching side, while we can identify a few top-tier pitchers to prioritize, you can make a case for a lot of cheap dart throwing there as well. It looks like the MLB weather is going to cooperate everywhere tonight, so let’s dive right in and see what we find.

Monday Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on DraftKings and FanDuel

We have a clear chalky ace with Tarik Skubal making his 2nd start for the Dodgers, and we also have two lefties at a bit of a discount facing high-strikeout opponents in Anaheim. I expect this will lead to all the pitcher ownership condensing to Southern California tonight:

TOP TIER PITCHING

• Tarik Skubal vs. Royals – 30.7% K, 4% BB, 2.81 ERA, 2.74 SIERA
• Logan Henderson at Padres – 32.3% K, 5.2% BB, 2.70 ERA, 2.82 SIERA
• Sonny Gray at Blue Jays – 21.9% K, 6.6% BB, 2.78 ERA, 3.83 SIERA
• MacKenzie Gore at Angels – 25.6% K, 8.6% BB, 4.55 ERA, 3.81 SIERA
• Reid Detmers vs. Rangers – 28.3% K, 7.4% BB, 4.12 ERA, 3.42 SIERA
• Casey Mize vs. Brewers – 23.7% K, 6.1% BB, 3.40 ERA, 3.86 SIERA
• Trevor Rogers at Twins – 20.2% K, 6.6% BB, 4.20 ERA, 4.21 SIERA

Tarik Skubal is, of course, an elite pitcher who should be the highest-owned pitcher on this slate by a pretty wide margin at just $10,700 on both sites. That salary is more than fair for his great skill set, consistency, and long-term track record. I just want to ask this one question – are you totally sure that Skubal is better than Logan Henderson? Skubal has a much longer history of being elite, but if we just take the 15 starts and 75 innings of Henderson’s career, what really is the difference between them? I’ll tell you what the difference is – nothing. In theory, Skubal has more best-case scenarios from innings, but he’s still only reached 7 innings 4 times in 17 starts this season. To me, the only real difference here is that we can’t be sure that Milwaukee won’t look for an excuse to pull Henderson after 5 innings, rather than letting him go 6. He got 6 innings last week, but we can’t know for sure what his real pitch count limit is at this point. Because of that, I will still say Skubal is the better play than Henderson, but I also think it’s way closer than what projections and ownership are going to say it is. The matchups are pretty close as well and not enough to sway me towards one over the other. I’ll call Skubal the SP1, but this is extremely close, and Henderson is my SP2, who I’ll be willing to play more of if ownership projections skew as far towards Skubal as I expect them to.
