Happy Monday! We kick off the new week with a good-looking 8-game slate that features a lot of strong pitching as well as a Coors Field game and a few other high-end offenses in good matchups. Be sure to note the earlier-than-usual start time of 6:40 PM ET.

I am going to have one more day of festivities tomorrow before I get back to my regular grind on Wednesday of everyday Musings. Many thanks to Cards for helping out with the analysis, allowing me to enjoy a wonderful week of family and friends as my son is now officially married and my family has been increased to a Party of Five! If any of you want some chicken alfredo or pork tenderloin any time in the next 3 years, just come on by, we’ve got plenty.

Monday Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on FanDuel & DraftKings

zack-wheeler-800x480

This is a very strong pitching slate in a variety of price ranges. There are a few notable discrepancies between the sites, but I’ll sort these tiers based on DK pricing, which gives us three salary levels to consider:

THE TWO ACES

Zack Wheeler vs. Brewers – 29% K, 7.8% BB, 2.32 ERA, 3.20 SIERA
Tarik Skubal at Rangers – 31.3% K, 4.3% BB, 2.01 ERA, 2.58 SIERA

These are two of the best pitchers in the league and are strong options on any slate, in any matchup, and at any salary. They are also the most expensive pitchers on both sites, as they should be.

Zack Wheeler is about as trustable as they come. He has gone 100+ pitches in 8 of his 12 starts and has only allowed more than 2 runs three times this season. Matchup hardly matters for him in real life, but it is still relevant for the likelihood of DFS upside. The Brewers are an above-average power lineup at around an average strikeout rate, which is good enough to leave Wheeler as the top pitcher on the board but not make him any sort of must-play. I will gladly play Wheeler in any and every lineup where he fits, but we do have enough cheap pitching that this is not the kind of slate where we need to jam him in at all costs.

Tarik Skubal is every bit as good as Wheeler on a per-inning basis, but he has less margin for error with his lower pitch count. The matchups are similar, and this current Texas lineup has enough strikeouts to make the case for a ceiling game from Skubal. I assume Wheeler will be the more popular choice, and while I do prefer Wheeler, it’s extremely close. There won’t be much opportunity to play them in the same lineup, which leaves Skubal as a bit of a spend-up-to-be-different option. He’s still nowhere near sneaky, but assuming projected ownership favors Wheeler, I’ll be looking to split them up fairly evenly. Just like I said with Wheeler, there is enough cheaper pitching that I am not going to have one of these guys in every lineup.
