Happy Thursday! We’ve got a slow day in MLB, with just a 4-game main slate that starts at 6:45 PM ET. The slate features a playoff caliber matchup between Chris Sale and Zack Wheeler and then a third ace starting after bedtime, with MacKenzie Gore in Seattle. Those three aces leave us with clear tiers on both the pitching and hitting sides, with the remaining five offenses in a tangled race for the top spot.

Because the first game of the slate is the second game of a doubleheader, we may have to wait a little longer than usual to see the MLB starting lineups roll in, but we should still get them in plenty of time to get everything set.

Thursday Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on FanDuel & DraftKings

Wheeler of the Phillies

We have a huge and obvious gap between the top three pitchers and the rest of the pool.

TOP TIER TRIO

I will continue to say that I think Zack Wheeler is the best pitcher in the league. He now has 7 straight quality starts, which includes no runs allowed over his last 3 starts. He has also hit a new level in strikeouts this season, with 8+ strikeouts in 7 of his 11 starts and only 1 start with less than 6 strikeouts. The matchup is not ideal, but matchup really doesn’t matter for him. There’s also some possibility that the Atlanta lineup is not quite full strength since it’s the second game of a doubleheader, but we’ll have to wait and see for that. Because we have two other aces who he is considerably more expensive than, this is not by any means a must-play. But where salary allows, Wheeler is my SP1.

MacKenzie Gore has also seen a huge jump in strikeouts this season, with 9+ strikeouts in 5 of his 11 starts. His control is fine but not as trustable as Wheeler’s, and he also allows more power than Wheeler. Tonight, he makes up for those slight differences with a better matchup in a better ballpark. Seattle can hit for power, but nearly everyone in their lineup is a strikeout risk. I need to mention one tiny little, probably not important, piece of information: he left his last start with tightness in his left leg. He had thrown 91 pitches, and I have tightness in my left leg every day, and I’m still typing, so I’m assuming everything is fine here. But, now you know – he had tightness in his leg. Assuming that is a non-issue, he is in a virtual tie with Wheeler, and given the discount, I’d have no issue with you calling Gore the SP1. I prefer Wheeler, but it’s close, and I love them both.
