Happy Thursday! It’s a kind of slow day in baseball, with just a 6-game main slate starting at 6:40 PM ET on DraftKings, while FanDuel has a 5-game main slate starting at 7:05 PM ET. There is very little that jumps out on either the pitching or hitting side, giving it a very September-ish feel, where scoring is down in both real life and DFS.

The wondrous life of Kevin Roth continues with yet another clear day of MLB weather, so let’s dive right in and see what we find.

Thursday Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on FanDuel & DraftKings

Luzardo of the Phillies

There are a bunch of decent pitchers on the mound, but nothing that is super thrilling when adding in the matchups. I’ll sort into two tiers, using $8,000 on DK as the salary cutoff between tiers:

TOP TIER PITCHING

Ignoring salary and matchup, Jesus Luzardo is the best pitcher on this slate with the highest ceiling. He has gone over 100 pitches in his last 2 starts, and he has at least 7 strikeouts in 8 of his last 11 starts. He’s only had one sub-par start since July, and of course, to make things difficult, that was against these very same Mets. But really, when I look at the Mets against lefties, it’s basically an average matchup. Because so many of his strikeouts come against lefties, it lowers the ceiling a bit, but he still has a 24.1% K rate without allowing a lot of power to righties. I can’t quite call him ‘safe,’ but I don’t see anything that takes him out of the top spot as the SP1 on this slate. The salaries are bunched up enough that it shouldn’t be that hard to get to him. Let’s wait and see what else we find.
