Million Dollar Musings: MLB DFS Picks Today for Thursday 9/4
Whether you are looking for the top pitchers or the best stacks, Dave Potts (aka CheeseIsGood) has you covered with an extensive deep dive into his MLB DFS picks. Cheese, one of the preeminent baseball minds in all of fantasy sports and a winner of a $1,000,000 1st-place prize on both DraftKings and FanDuel, is here to give you his musings on the upcoming MLB DFS slate.
Happy Thursday! We have a slow day in MLB with just a 5-game main slate starting a little early at 6:40 PM ET. I’ve heard rumors that there are other things happening tonight, though I can neither confirm nor deny. You can know that whatever other sports may or may not kick off this week, I will be all in on baseball for the remainder of the season.
We have three games with some Yellow in the MLB weather forecast, but at this moment, it all looks more likely than not to be safe to play everything.

Thursday Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on FanDuel & DraftKings
We have a slate where most of the pitchers are at least somewhat viable in MME, but we also have a very clear top two squaring off in Pittsburgh. I’ll include Carlos Rodon in the top tier based on salary, but it’s really a top two where you’re just deciding if you care about the ownership.
TOP TIER PITCHING
- Paul Skenes vs. Dodgers – 28.6% K, 5.8% BB, 2.05 ERA, 3.18 SIERA
- Carlos Rodon at Astros – 26.5% K, 10% BB, 3.18 ERA, 3.93 SIERA
- Blake Snell at Pirates – 24.1% K, 11.4% BB, 2.41 ERA, 4.29 SIERA
The slate kicks off with a very interesting matchup between Paul Skenes and Blake Snell. Skenes is the better and certainly more consistent pitcher here, but he’s also the one facing the Dodgers, while Snell faces one of the worst offenses in the league.
I’ll start by saying I’m not at all concerned about the matchup for Skenes. The kid has 51 career starts, and he’s been awesome in almost every one of them. Plus, at this moment, the Dodgers are watered down enough that they are about an average lineup. There is only one batter in the entire projected lineup below 20% K, and only Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman really stand out as anything to be afraid of. He’s not posting a lot of huge strikeout games, so it’s not as if this is an absolute must-play, but he is the clear SP1 if salary doesn’t matter.
Blake Snell is always more of a wild card with his wonky control, but the strikeouts look to be coming back. In his 5 starts since coming off the IL, he has a 30.4% K rate with 16% swinging strikes, and 3 of those 5 starts went for 8+ strikeouts. There’s always the chance his control just goes so bad that he can’t overcome it, but in this great matchup, I see him as the clear SP2. He has so much more ceiling than anyone below him that I’m not going to overthink the risk. If salary allows, I’d just play Skenes/Snell in every DK lineup and move on with my day. On FD, the salary gap is even bigger, and I’m just as content with Snell as my SP1 there.
