Million Dollar Musings: MLB DFS Picks Today for Tuesday 8/5
Whether you are looking for the top pitchers or the best stacks, Dave Potts (aka CheeseIsGood) has you covered with an extensive deep dive into his MLB DFS picks. Cheese, one of the preeminent baseball minds in all of fantasy sports and a winner of a $1,000,000 1st-place prize on both DraftKings and FanDuel, is here to give you his musings on the upcoming MLB DFS slate.
Happy Tuesday! The opening night of Toronto in Coors Field was as absurd as expected, and we are back at it tonight with the Rockies completely out of major league pitchers. This entire slate hinges on what you do with the Blue Jays. I am going to end up with a smaller pool of offenses than usual because I am only willing to play teams and batters that I can see having the clear upside to beat Toronto even if they score another 15 runs.
The early morning ownership projections in the MLB DFS optimizer are not showing huge numbers for Toronto, but I expect that to change as the day moves on, and particularly in small-field contests, the ownership should be extreme on these Blue Jays bats. Let’s dig in and see if we can figure out what to do about it.

Tuesday Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on FanDuel & DraftKings
We’ve got a few aces on the mound, but the salary cap is tight, so I’m going to be very picky with them. I’ll use $8,500 on DK as the cutoff for the top tier, although it’s sort of more of a top four, and then a little gap.
TOP TIER PITCHING
- Garrett Crochet vs. Royals – 31% K, 6.7% BB, 2.23 ERA, 2.92 SIERA
- Bryan Woo vs. White Sox – 24.2% K, 4.8% BB, 3.11 ERA, 3.55 SIERA
- Freddy Peralta at Braves – 25.7% K, 8.8% BB, 3.08 ERA, 3.84 SIERA
- Nathan Eovaldi vs. Yankees – 26.5% K, 5.1% BB, 1.49 ERA, 3.09 SIERA
- Shota Imanaga vs. Reds – 19% K, 5.1% BB, 3.25 ERA, 4.59 SIERA
- Ryan Pepiot at Angels – 24.1% K, 8.5% BB, 3.80 ERA, 3.96 SIERA
Garrett Crochet is a great pitcher with the highest strikeout rate on the slate. The ceiling and floor are high from his strikeouts and his ability to pile up easy innings. But he’s also $11,000 on FD and $10,900 on DK on a slate where salary is a big factor. When I look at the current Royals lineup, it isn’t even really a low-strikeout lineup at this point, and there is quite a bit of nonsense in the bottom half. Where this leaves me is saying he’s the SP1 if you’re able to spend up for a pitcher, but at this moment, pending what else we find, I don’t think spending this much at SP is a high priority on this slate. I also just want to point out the slight risk of seeing his pitch count lowered. I don’t think that’s going to happen yet, but it will at some point. They skipped his turn in the rotation to give him a few extra days of rest, and most likely, that was in place of lowering his pitch count when he does start. It’s something to keep an eye on, but for tonight, I’m assuming he’s a full go.
Bryan Woo is a very good real-life pitcher, particularly at home. But he’s still just an average strikeout pitcher, and only at a 20.5% K rate to lefties. I would expect he sees 6 lefties, and while his home run issues are not as likely to be an issue in Seattle, I still don’t love how power-prone he has been. He’s good, he’s steady, and I would say he’s unlikely to hurt you. On a different slate, I’d say let’s spend up for this floor, but I’m not sure this is a spend-up-for-the-floor kind of slate. His discount from Crochet is just about right. I’ll call him the SP2, but just like with Crochet, I’m not sure how much I’m going to get here.
Freddy Peralta doesn’t have the strikeouts of Crochet or the control of Woo. The matchup here is decent, with the bottom third of the Braves falling into the abyss, but they have five solid lefties up top, which doesn’t match up well for Peralta’s splits. I’m much less willing to pay $10,000 for Peralta than I am for Crochet or Woo. It’s all close, and he’s certainly playable, but he’s the odd man out of these expensive options for me.
