Happy Tuesday! This 12-game slate appears to be approaching barn-burner status at first glance. I see 9 top-tier pitchers and 9 top-tier offenses that all have very clear upside, and there are no shortage of great plays in all different salary ranges, particularly on the hitting side. This is one of those slates where I’m just going to have cross a bunch of really good players off my list and pick some favorites to lean into. Let’s see what we find.

Tuesday Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on DraftKings and FanDuel

We have 9 good pitchers priced from $8,300 up to $10,700 on DK and between $8,900 and $11,000 on FD. All of them are completely playable, but I’m going to make some cuts to get my pool down to a manageable size.

TOP TIER PITCHING

• Cristopher Sanchez at Cardinals – 27.8% K, 5.6% BB, 2.65 ERA, 2.86 SIERA
• Dylan Cease vs. Red Sox – 36.4% K, 10.3% BB, 2.28 ERA, 2.89 SIERA
• Nolan McLean at Braves – 28.5% K, 8.8% BB, 3.51 ERA, 3.44 SIERA
• Kyle Harrison at Padres – 31.1% K, 5.9% BB, 2.84 ERA, 2.92 SIERA
• Hunter Brown at Giants – 25.6% K, 13% BB, 3.53 ERA, 4.21 SIERA
• Blake Snell vs. Royals – 1st start off IL
• Ryan Weathers vs. Mariners – 26.2% K, 6.8% BB, 3.79 ERA, 3.41 SIERA
• Sean Burke vs. Reds – 27.4% K, 7.4% BB, 3.08 ERA, 3.44 SIERA
• Bryan Woo at Yankees – 24.3% K, 5.2% BB, 4.31 ERA, 3.60 SIERA

This is a very impressive group of pitchers, and you can certainly make a case to play any and all of them. However, I’m not willing to try and force 9 pitchers into my primary pool, so I’m going to start by making some cuts.

The first cut for me is Blake Snell in his first start off the IL. He has not topped 4 innings or 73 pitches in his 4 rehab starts, plus he’s been his usual ‘all over the place’ self between good and bad outings, even at Triple-A. I’ll wait to see him get stretched out and show that he’s healthy before I consider him. In theory, he has enough of a discount to be viable even at 80 pitches if we get vintage Snell, but for me, there are enough other pitchers without these question marks.

Nolan McLean is good enough to beat the Braves, but there are other good pitchers in far better matchups at lower salaries. He’s not close enough to Cease and Sanchez and not far enough ahead of these other pitchers to make it into my pool.

The next thing I’m going to say is that I don’t think I can play both Cristopher Sanchez and Dylan Cease in the same lineup on DK, and I would much prefer to just focus on one of them for the lineups where I am spending up at pitcher. While Sanchez is an amazing pitcher, this is not a hard decision at all for me to side with Cease as my SP1. Sanchez does have the occasional big strikeout game, but he’s still generally more about the efficiency and real-life success from easy innings. He has topped 7 strikeouts in only 2 of his last 10 starts, while Cease has gone for 8+ strikeouts in a silly 11 of his last 14 starts. Cease also has the more consistent pitch-count leash, giving him the same innings upside as Sanchez even with his higher walk rate. You could argue either way about who has the tougher matchup, but Sanchez also has the lower-strikeout matchup against St. Louis. This all makes for a very easy decision for me to make Cease my spend-up ace. We’ll see what else we find before deciding how heavily to prioritize him at his salary.
