Million Dollar Musings: Wednesday, August 9

CheeseIsGood, a two-time winner of a $1,000,000 first-place prize in DFS, is here to give you his musings on the upcoming MLB DFS slate. Whether you are looking for the top pitchers or the best stacks, Cheese has you covered with an extensive deep dive into his MLB DFS picks.
Happy Wednesday! We have a very interesting 9-game slate on tap, with some strong top-tier pitching and a couple of obvious top offenses. It’s been a while since we’ve had a slate with a potentially worrisome level of ownership, but that should be the case here with the Braves and Red Sox facing two of the weakest pitchers in the league.
I’ll find a few pivots that I like on both sides of the ledger, but the best of the MLB DFS picks are going to be fairly obvious.
If you’re playing the early 3-game slate, we’ve got some expert tags in LineupHQ to get you pointed in the right direction.

We have a top four, headlined by two pitchers above 30% strikeouts.
TOP TIER FOURSOME, OR QUARTET, IF YOU PREFER
Shohei Ohtani vs. Giants – 31.8% K, 10.1% BB, 3.32 ERA, 3.58 SIERA
Kevin Gausman at Guardians – 32.8% K, 6.3% BB, 3.20 ERA, 3.05 SIERA
Max Fried at Pirates – 26.8% K, 4.9% BB, 1.69 ERA, 3.02 SIERA
Yu Darvish at Mariners – 25.4% K, 8% BB, 4.41 ERA, 3.99 SIERA

I love Shohei Ohtani. He is a superhero of historic proportions, and he can have an elite start any time he takes the mound. Meanwhile, regular human Kevin Gausman has a higher strikeout rate, lower walk rate, lower ERA, and lower SIERA than Ohtani. Neither of have been immune to bad starts, just like every other pitcher in modern day society. But when I look at who has more good starts, mostly due to the better control, I keep coming back to Gausman.
Ohtani does have more strikeouts in his matchup, but that is more than offset by the nonsense lack of power from a Cleveland team that is buried at the bottom of the league in home runs and ISO. These guys both have slate-breaking upside, and I’d be thrilled with either, but officially, Gausman is my SP1.
