Happy Wednesday! And since I wasn’t here yesterday, let me also officially say Happy September! It’s incredible we are already to the final month of the season.

We have another spread-out, split-slate kind of Wednesday with games spread out all over the place. I’ll start with a quick peek at the 6-game early slate on DK, which starts at 12:40 PM ET, before moving to the main evening slates, which again have an hour gap in start time between the slates. We get a 9-gamer on FD beginning at 6:40 PM ET, while DK doesn’t start until 7:40 PM ET with another 6-game slate.

Beyond the difference in start times, we also have wildly different types of slates today, with the early games being pitcher-less and loaded with offense, while the evening slate is a pitching paradise with several of the top aces in the league. Let’s dive in and see how to sort through two slates that are very difficult for very different reasons.

Wednesday Early Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on DraftKings

This is a horrifying pitching slate, but the good news is you don’t have to pay for any of it. To sum up how bad this pitching slate is, I don’t think you need any more information than this: the chalk is probably going to be a guy with an 11.4% K rate and a 5.34 SIERA. Here’s the nonsense we’re looking at:

• Casey Mize at Reds – 21.5% K, 6.1% BB, 3.45 ERA, 4.16 SIERA
• Bryce Miller at Red Sox – 24.5% K, 6.6% BB, 4.12 ERA, 3.74 SIERA
• Trevor Rogers at Rockies – 20.9% K, 6.4% BB, 4.38 ERA, 4.11 SIERA
• Patrick Sandoval vs. Mariners – 23.2% K, 10.6% BB, 4.20 ERA, 4.34 SIERA
• Cody Bradford vs. A’s – 11.4% K, 5.3% BB, 3.42 ERA, 5.34 SIERA
• Jacob Lopez at Rangers – 21.8% K, 11.3% BB, 4.82 ERA, 4.72 SIERA
• Grant Holmes at Nationals – 18.7% K, 10% BB, 3.71 ERA, 4.73 SIERA
• Andrew Painter at Diamondbacks – 19.7% K, 8.6% BB, 5.95 ERA, 4.43 SIERA

I have no interest in Casey Mize as the most-expensive pitcher on the slate with a 14.5% K rate since the start of July. I also have no interest in the next most-expensive pitcher on the slate, Bryce Miller. He completely fell apart after his strong start to the season and is only back in the rotation due to an injury to Emerson Hancock. His strikeouts disappeared, while the control and the home runs continue to pile up. Even though Mize and Miller aren’t expensive, I still see no reason to play them as the only pitchers above $8,000 on this goofy slate.

I guess let’s talk about Cody Bradford next. He’s a lefty facing the A’s for $6,800 on a terrible pitching slate, so sure, I get it. But he’s also made only 5 starts this season and has managed just a 15.7% K rate to righties and has been extremely lucky on HR/FB, which has kept his ERA at 3.42, despite a scary 5.34 SIERA. The good news is he has great control, and as an extreme fly-ball pitcher, if the fly balls stay in the park, he should theoretically be able to put together some easy innings. The other good news is that he got up to 100 pitches last start, so there is some innings upside if things go his way. If you don’t care about ownership, I guess I’d say he’s probably ‘the best’ of these bad options as far as just trying to survive this slate with positive points, but let’s see what else we find, because this strikes me as pretty terrible chalk if he’s going to be something like 50% owned.
