MLB Grind Down: Friday, June 5th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Tsuyoshi Wada (FD: $6700, DK: $7400)
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 85.0 — SIERA: 3.69 — K/9: 8.1 — BB/9: 2.5 — FB Rate: 40.7% — HR/FB: 9.2%

Washington Nationals Offense (2015)

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.308 (Rank: 19) — Strikeout Rate: 22.4% (Rank: 21)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.76 (Rank: 20)
Analysis: Wada takes the mound for the Cubs tonight. He has pitched well since the start of 2014, posting a 3.69 SIERA with a K/9 of 8.1. He’s been sharp in his first few starts this season and he draws a favorable matchup tonight against the Nationals, who are ranked 16th in wOBA and 24th in strikeout rate against left-handed pitching this season.
Pitcher Rating:64.7
Tanner Roark (FD: $5600, DK: $5700)
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 230.0 — SIERA: 4.06 — K/9: 5.8 — BB/9: 1.8 — FB Rate: 37.2% — HR/FB: 8.0%

Chicago Cubs Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.302 (Rank: 20) — Strikeout Rate: 26.1% (Rank: 30)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.338 (Rank: 3) — Strikeout Rate: 22.1% (Rank: 19)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 4.00 (Rank: 2)
Analysis: Roark will be making his third start of the season. This may be the first start where he is not on a pitch count, as he was limited in his first two. Roark is not a high-strikeout pitcher, averaging only 5.8 strikeouts per nine innings over the last two seasons. While the Cubs do strike out often, they also take a lot pitches, ranking second in pitches per plate appearance this season. With such limited upside, Roark is not a pitcher that is on my radar tonight.

New York Yankees Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.320 (Rank: 7) — Strikeout Rate: 19.5% (Rank: 13)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.308 (Rank: 19) — Strikeout Rate: 18.2% (Rank: 7)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.92 (Rank: 4)
Analysis: Weaver has pitched better recently, but he’s not a high-strikeout pitcher at this stage of his career. He has less than five strikeouts in eight of his first 11 starts this season, which really caps his upside in daily fantasy. He can safely be avoided tonight against a Yankees’ offense that is ranked seventh in wOBA against right-handed pitching. The Yankees also take a lot of pitches, ranking fourth in pitches per plate appearance this season.
Pitcher Rating:43.4
Nathan Eovaldi (FD: $7500, DK: $6300)
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 257.0 — SIERA: 3.92 — K/9: 6.4 — BB/9: 2.0 — FB Rate: 31.5% — HR/FB: 7.9%

LA Angels of Anaheim Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.291 (Rank: 26) — Strikeout Rate: 20.4% (Rank: 17)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.310 (Rank: 18) — Strikeout Rate: 18.5% (Rank: 8)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.72 (Rank: 24)
Analysis: Eovaldi is a serviceable big league pitcher, but not one that we typically use in daily fantasy baseball. He has a 3.92 SIERA with a low K/9 of 6.4 since the start of 2014. He has a fairly high fly-ball rate, which could be a problem in the home run-friendly Yankee Stadium. While the Angels offense has underperformed this season, they have been much better over the last two weeks, ranking 18th in wOBA and eighth in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching.

Last 14 Days: PA: 58 — wOBA: 0.220 — ISO: 0.078 — wRC+: 40
Analysis: Calhoun has been swinging a cold bat over the last two weeks with a paltry .220 wOBA and a .078 ISO, but that has brought his price down to a very playable level on FanDuel ($2,600). He has hit right-handed pitching well throughout his career and he sees a positive ballpark shift playing in the hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium. The short porch in right field always gives a boost to the left-handed hitters in New York.

Last 14 Days: PA: 48 — wOBA: 0.354 — ISO: 0.326 — wRC+: 127
Analysis: Teixeira is typically a slow starter and he’s typically injury-prone. So far, he’s been able to avoid both of those this season. He is a switch-hitter with good power from both sides of the plate. He draws a terrific matchup against fly-ball pitcher, Jered Weaver, who has really struggled against batters that can hit from the left side of the plate.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.315 (Rank: 16) — Strikeout Rate: 17.2% (Rank: 4)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.69 (Rank: 27)
Analysis: This may be the only opportunity to target Lincecum away from AT&T Park and feel relatively good about it. He doesn’t have the best numbers on the road, but he does draw the best pitching matchup on the board. The Phillies are ranked dead last in wOBA against right-handed pitching this season and they average the fourth-fewest pitches per plate appearance, which should help the (at times) erratic Lincecum. I like his chances to pitch a quality outing and possibly pick up a win along the way.
Pitcher Rating:64.3
Jerome Williams (FD: $5100, DK: $4800)
Pitching Stats:

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.321 (Rank: 12) — Strikeout Rate: 20.1% (Rank: 13)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.70 (Rank: 26)
Analysis: Williams is one of the worst starters to take the mound tonight. He has a mediocre SIERA of 4.21 over the last two seasons with a low K/9 of 6.1. He’s an easy avoid tonight against the Giants, who are ranked sixth in wOBA and fifth in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season.

Analysis: Belt should fly under the radar tonight (as usual) thanks to the wealth of options at first base. He’s near the top of my list though, as he has great power against right-handed pitching and a great matchup against Jerome Williams. Since the start of 2014, Williams has given up a .343 wOBA to batters that hit from the left side of the plate.

Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.81 (Rank: 12)
Analysis: Fausto Carmona Roberto Hernandez is an easy pitcher to avoid on most nights and that’s the case again tonight, as the Astros head to Toronto to take on the Blue Jays. Hernandez has a below-average SIERA with a below-average strikeout rate. The worst part is that he faces a very competent offense in one of the best hitter’s venues in all of baseball.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.318 (Rank: 13) — Strikeout Rate: 22.9% (Rank: 24)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.79 (Rank: 15)
Analysis: If Sanchez could improve his command, he would be an intriguing fantasy option. The problem is that his command has yet to improve, as he has walked 4.6 batters per nine innings over the last two seasons. Tonight he faces an Astros’ offense that hits a lot of home runs, but one that also strikes out at a very high rate. Sanchez is a small favorite here, but the high total should scare you off of both pitchers in this one.

Analysis: Valbuena has everything that I’m looking for. He is fairly cheap across the industry, he has good numbers against right-handed pitching, he draws a favorable matchup against Aaron Sanchez, and he’s playing in one of the best hitter’s parks in baseball. If you need a value play at third base tonight, look Valbuena’s way.

He also has good power numbers against right-handed pitching with a .221 ISO over the last two seasons. He’s playing at home in the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre and he’s facing a pitcher that he’s had great success off in the past: 7-for-17 with six extra-base hits lifetime against Roberto Hernandez.

Analysis: Tillman has not pitched as bad as his 5.94 ERA would suggest, but he doesn’t have a high enough strikeout rate to overcome the fact that he continues to give up so many runs. Baltimore Orioles Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.314 (Rank: 14) — Strikeout Rate: 22.7% (Rank: 27)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.308 (Rank: 19) — Strikeout Rate: 19.5% (Rank: 12)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.76 (Rank: 19)
Analysis: Marcum has yet to throw more than 90 pitches in any start this season, which does cap his upside quite a bit. He has pitched pretty well though, posting a 3.68 SIERA with a K/9 of 9.6. He’s a very intriguing play on DraftKings tonight. At $4,300, you can take any other pitcher that you want and then load up on the hitters in Coors Field. Even if Marcum only gives you five innings against the Orioles, he still has a decent chance to pay off his cheap salary.

Analysis: Chris Tillman gives up similar splits to batters from both sides of the plate, but I’ll be heavily targeting the left-handed hitters in this Indians’ lineup tonight. Brantley leads the way for Cleveland, as he is a terrific all-around offensive player. He has a .392 wOBA and a .189 ISO against right-handed pitching over the last two seasons.
