MLB Grind Down: Friday, May 15th

The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.

The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Remember, these writeups are done prior to lineups being released, so make sure to check our Starting Lineups page to ensure the recommended options are playing.

Pitcher Grind Down

Jeff Locke (FanDuel: $6500, DraftKings: $5700)

Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.03 — K Rate: 17.1% — K/9: 6.44 — BB Rate: 7.2% — GB Rate: 52.3%
2014: SIERA: 4.07 — K Rate: 16.2% — K/9: 6.10 — BB Rate: 7.3% — GB Rate: 50.5%

Chicago Cubs vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.339 (Rank: 3)
Strikeout Rate: 27.5% (Rank: 29)

Analysis: This the sole day game on the schedule today, but the players are available in the player pool if you are playing the all-day leagues. It appears that the wind will be blowing out to center today in Wrigley, which basically kills the fantasy appeal of both pitchers in this game. Locke has posted mediocre numbers so far this season with a 4.03 SIERA and a K/9 of 6.4. He can safely be avoided, as he is an underdog in a game that features a total of 9.5 runs.

Pitcher Rating: 52.2

Kyle Hendricks (FD: $6100, DK: $6700)

Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.02 — K Rate: 17.4% — K/9: 6.68 — BB Rate: 6.1% — GB Rate: 49.5%
2014: SIERA: 4.06 — K Rate: 14.6% — K/9: 5.27 — BB Rate: 4.7% — GB Rate: 47.8%

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.289 (Rank: 27)
Strikeout Rate: 19.6% (Rank: 11)

Analysis: Hendricks is in the same boat as Jeff Locke. Even if the matchup was ideal, the conditions prohibit us from targeting a pitcher in this game. With the wind blowing out to center in Wrigley, the ball is going to carry and carry. Hendricks doesn’t have a high enough strikeout rate to overcome the few runs that he will likely give up against the Pirates.

Pitcher Rating:54.2

Neil Walker (FD: $3000, DK: $4000)

2015 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.376 — ISO: 0.158 — OBP: 0.383
2014 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.364 — ISO: 0.222 — OBP: 0.339

Analysis: As mentioned above, both offenses see a huge boost today with the wind blowing out to center field. The total for the game is already up to 9.5 runs. Walker and the other Pirates’ bats are all in play. Walker has a .376 wOBA against right-handed pitching this season and he draws a favorable matchup against Kyle Hendricks, who has given up a .355 wOBA to batters that hit from the left side of the plate.

Kris Bryant (FD: $3900, DK: $4800)

2015 vs. LH Pitching: wOBA: 0.246 — ISO: 0.063 — OBP: 0.278

Analysis: Bryant’s numbers against left-handed pitching haven’t been great this season. He has a .246 wOBA and a .063 ISO. The sample size is still very small though. He should be able to improve on those numbers today with the wind blowing out in Wrigley. Not only that, but he also draws a favorable matchup against Jeff Locke, who has given up a .334 wOBA to right-handed hitters since the start of 2014.

Pitching Stats:

2014: SIERA: 3.78 — K Rate: 21.6% — K/9: 8.27 — BB Rate: 8.2% — GB Rate: 39.9%

Philadelphia Phillies vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.258 (Rank: 30)
Strikeout Rate: 20.1% (Rank: 16)

Analysis: Anderson is one of those pitchers whose numbers are much better than we would expect. He has a 3.85 SIERA with a K/9 of 7.2 and a low walk rate of 6.3%. He doesn’t produce a ton of ground-ball outs, but that’s not a huge issue in tonight’s matchup against the Phillies, who are ranked dead last in wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. Anderson is cheap across the industry and he’s actually a small favorite tonight. He’s a sneaky play in tournaments and as an SP2 on multi-pitcher sites.

Pitcher Rating:62.9

Chad Billingsley (FD: $5100, DK: $6100)

Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.79 — K Rate: 10.6% — K/9: 4.5 — BB Rate: 4.3% — GB Rate: 42.1%

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.321 (Rank: 8)
Strikeout Rate: 19.8% (Rank: 13)

Analysis: In his first two starts back in the major leagues, Billingsley has given up a combined ten earned runs while striking out five batters over ten innings of work. Until he can prove that he can get back to his 2012 form, there is no need to target him in daily fantasy baseball. He draws a tough matchup tonight against the Diamondbacks, who are ranked eighth in wOBA (.321) against right-handed pitching this season.

Analysis: The Diamondbacks’ offense is in a great spot tonight against Chad Billingsley, who has not been sharp in his first two starts of the season. Peralta should be in the lineup tonight and he’ll likely be batting clean-up. He has great power against right-handed pitching, as evidenced by his .393 wOBA and .288 ISO this season.

Baltimore Orioles vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.338 (Rank: 2)
Strikeout Rate: 23.5% (Rank: 27)

Analysis: After ripping Weaver before his last start, he came out with something to prove. He pitched a complete game shutout against the Astros at home. While I’d like to say that we’ll see more of that in the future, the numbers don’t back me up. Weaver has not pitched well this season with a 4.67 SIERA. He’s an even worse pitcher in daily fantasy because he doesn’t strike anyone out. He is currently averaging only 4.4 strikeouts per nine innings. He can be avoided tonight against the Orioles, who are ranked second in wOBA (.338) against right-handed pitching this season.

Pitcher Rating:39.1

Wei-Yin Chen (FD: $7200, DK: $7500)

Pitching Stats:

LA Angels of Anaheim vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.322 (Rank: 13)
Strikeout Rate: 19.0% (Rank: 10)

Analysis: Chen is an intriguing play tonight against the Angels at home. His numbers haven’t been great this season, but they haven’t been awful either. He has a 4.41 SIERA with a K/9 of 6.8. His command hasn’t been as sharp in year’s past, but that should improve as the season progresses. He draws a decent matchup against the Angels, who are right around the major league average in wOBA against left-handed pitching. Chen is not a great cash game play, but is worth a look in some of these large tournaments and qualifiers.

Analysis: It didn’t take long for Trout’s numbers against southpaws to come around. He now has a .406 wOBA and a .280 ISO against left-handed pitching this season. Trout offers a little bit of everything, as he can hit for power, steal bases, and drive in runs. He draws a favorable matchup against Wei-Yin Chen and he gets to face him in Camden Yards, which grades out as the eighth-best ballpark for right-handed hitters.

Analysis: The Orioles have to be happy with the production that Paredes has provided so far this season. No one was expecting him to play this well, but he’s been a great find for the O’s. He has a .460 wOBA against right-handed pitching and a .444 wOBA at home this season. Cincinnati Reds vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.328 (Rank: 11)
Strikeout Rate: 21.1% (Rank: 18)

Analysis: Other than his two starts against the Dodgers, Bumgarner has had a very slow start to the season. Despite giving up quite a few runs, his indicators still look very good. He owns a 3.31 SIERA with a K/9 of 8.7 and a walk rate of 4.4%. His price is a little higher than I’d like to pay for him (especially with Clayton Kershaw pitching at home tonight), but he deserves consideration against the Reds, who are ranked 11th in wOBA and 18th in strikeout rate against southpaws this season.

Pitcher Rating:86.7

Analysis: Marquis has pitched better than I would have ever predicted so far this season, but that’s still not saying a whole lot. He owns a 4.01 SIERA with a K/9 of 7.2. His high strikeout rate wasn’t going to hold up over the course of the season, as he has never been a high strikeout pitcher in his career. He’ll likely see limited run support tonight against the Giants, who strike out at the 6th-lowest rate against right-handed pitching this season.

New York Mets vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.283 (Rank: 28)
Strikeout Rate: 19.0% (Rank: 9)

Analysis: Lohse’s numbers from this season look nearly identical to those from 2014. He has a 4.19 SIERA with a K/9 of 6.8. He’s a better real-life pitcher than he is in daily fantasy, thanks to his limited strikeout potential. He does draw a favorable matchup against the Mets, but Vegas doesn’t have a ton of confidence in the Brewers right now. They are sizable underdogs in a game that features a total of 7.5 runs.

Pitcher Rating:52.5

Bartolo Colon (FD: $8600, DK: $7600)

Pitching Stats:

Milwaukee Brewers vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.298 (Rank: 24)
Strikeout Rate: 22.5% (Rank: 26)

Analysis: Colon has been tremendous this season, posting a 3.19 SIERA with a K/9 of 7.8. What’s most impressive is the fact that he has only walked one batter all season and it came in his first start of the year. Colon throws a ton of strikes which helps him pitch deep into games and it helps him get ahead of hitters in the count. He’ll likely have a low ownership level tonight, but I’m very bullish on him in both cash games and tournaments. He draws a terrific matchup against the Brewers, who are ranked 24th in wOBA and 26th in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season.
