MLB Grind Down: Friday, May 29th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.
Remember, these writeups are done prior to lineups being released, so make sure to check our Starting Lineups page to ensure the recommended options are playing.

Edinson Volquez (FD: $8400, DK: $6600)
Pitching Stats:
2015: IP: 55 — SIERA: 4.43 — K Rate: 17.3% — K/9: 6.34 — BB Rate: 8.9% — FB Rate: 35.2% — HR/FB: 3.5%
2014: IP: 192 — SIERA: 4.20 — K Rate: 17.3% — K/9: 6.54 — BB Rate: 8.8% — FB Rate: 32.9% — HR/FB: 9.1%
Chicago Cubs vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.303 (Rank: 19) — Strikeout Rate: 0.259 (Rank: 30) — wRC+: 89 (Rank: 19)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 4.01 (Rank: 1)
Analysis: There is only one afternoon game on the schedule today, but it’s included in the all-day slate of games. The wind is blowing out to left field in Wrigley, which means we could see some routine fly balls turn into home runs once again (see: Bryce Harper). The total for the game is set at 9.0 runs and the Royals are sizable underdogs. Volquez doesn’t have a high enough strikeout rate to make up for the few mistakes that he’ll likely made today against a talented Cubs’ offense.
Pitcher Rating:45.8
Jake Arrieta (FD: $9800, DK: $9500)
Pitching Stats:
2015: IP: 58 — SIERA: 2.85 — K Rate: 27.0% — K/9: 9.62 — BB Rate: 6.1% — FB Rate: 26.3% — HR/FB: 7.5%
2014: IP: 156 — SIERA: 2.83 — K Rate: 27.2% — K/9: 9.59 — BB Rate: 6.7% — FB Rate: 28.4% — HR/FB: 4.5%
Kansas City Royals vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.322 (Rank: 10) — Strikeout Rate: 0.159 (Rank: 1) — wRC+: 105 (Rank: 7)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.62 (Rank: 30)
Analysis: Arrieta has been dominant this season with a 2.85 SIERA and a K/9 of 9.6. He has a very low fly-ball rate, which should help his cause today with the wind blowing out to left field. Although, when you factor in his matchup against the Royals, there are too many red flags to target him in cash games. The Royals are ranked 10th in wOBA (.322) and 1st in strikeout rate (15.9%) against right-handed pitching this season. Arrieta is a high-risk, high-reward play today against Kansas City.

He has a .397 wOBA with a .212 ISO against right-handed pitching this season and as I mentioned above, the wind is blowing out to left field at around 15 MPH.

wOBA: 0.321 (Rank: 11) — Strikeout Rate: 0.226 (Rank: 27) — wRC+: 103 (Rank: 9)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.76 (Rank: 20)
Analysis: Karns will take the mound for the Rays tonight, as they head to Baltimore to take on the Orioles in the hitter-friendly Camden Yards. The Orioles offense has not been as good as it was last season, but that will happen when you lose your best hitter in Nelson Cruz. Baltimore is still ranked 11th in wOBA (.321) and 9th in wRC+ (103) against right-handed pitching though. Karns has decent strikeout potential here, but with so many other pitching options on the board, he’s not on my radar.
Pitcher Rating:56.7
Miguel Gonzalez (FD: $7400, DK: $6700)
Pitching Stats:

Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.88 (Rank: 7)
Analysis: Gonzalez is having another good, but not great season for the Orioles. He owns a 4.34 SIERA with an average K/9 of 67.3. His walks are up this season, but so are his ground balls. He draws a favorable matchup against the Rays, who are ranked 22nd in both wOBA (.297) and strikeout rate (20.8%) against right-handed pitching this season. Gonzalez could post a quality outing tonight, but he lacks the upside that we are looking for from our starting pitchers.

Analysis: Jones has a much higher wOBA against left-handed pitching, but he’s no slouch against right-handed pitching. He has a .338 wOBA and a .141 ISO against righties this season. He draws a favorable matchup against Nate Karns, who has given up reverse-splits in his short time in the major leagues. Jones also sees a ballpark boost playing at home in the hitter-friendly Camden Yards.

Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.68 (Rank: 28)
Analysis: Like the rest of the Rockies’ starting rotation, Bettis can safely be avoided in all league formats. He has been mediocre at best this season with a 4.02 SIERA and a K/9 of 7.0. Since the start of 2014, he has given up a .420+ wOBA to hitters from both sides of the plate. Even though the Phillies are currently ranked dead last in wOBA against right-handed pitching, Bettis is an easy pitcher to avoid in tonight’s full slate of games.
Pitcher Rating:42.4
Cole Hamels (FD: $9800, DK: $10200)

wOBA: 0.296 (Rank: 23) — Strikeout Rate: 0.254 (Rank: 30) — wRC+: 71 (Rank: 27)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.75 (Rank: 21)
Analysis: Hamels has pitched well this season with a 3.58 SIERA and a K/9 of 9.1. He has been sharp in his last few starts and he draws one of the best pitching matchups on the board tonight. The Rockies are ranked 23rd in wOBA (.296) and 30th in strikeout rate (25.4%) against left-handed pitching this season. Hamels has the potential to strikeout 10+ batters in this one and with Chad Bettis pitching opposite him, he should get some run support as well. Hamels deserves consideration as one of the top pitching options on the board tonight.

Analysis: In general, I try to avoid having biases against individual players in daily fantasy sports, but with Strasburg, enough is enough. He has been burned too many bridges to be able to trust him as a cash game pitcher, regardless of the matchup. He still has good strikeout potential, but I won’t have any exposure to him outside of tournaments tonight. He has been too inconsistent to use in cash games and there are much safer pitching options available.

Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.77 (Rank: 18)
Analysis: Desclafani has been a serviceable starter for the Phillies this season, but he’s not the type of pitcher that we are looking to target in daily fantasy baseball. He has a below-average SIERA with an average K/9 of 6.9. He walks too many batters and he plays on a Reds’ team that can really struggle to score runs at times. He can safely be avoided against a Nationals’ offense that is ranked 8th in wOBA (.323) and 9th in wRC+ (103) against right-handed pitching this season.

He has 13 home runs to go along with 28 RBIs and 23 runs scored. He is on a heater of epic proportions and you know what they say, “you never leave a heater.” He is too cheap on DraftKings at a price of only $5,200. Analysis: Haren has been good, but not great this season for the Marlins. He owns a 4.23 SIERA with a low K/9 of 6.3. He doesn’t walk many batters, but he has one of the highest fly-ball rates of any pitcher in baseball. When you combine that with his slightly above-average HR/FB rate, that’s not a great combination. Citi Field is a tough ballpark to hit home runs in, but that’s still a concern heading into tonight’s matchup against the Mets. Haren is best suited as a GPP play tonight in New York, especially given the fact that Matt Harvey is pitching opposite him.

Analysis: The Dark Knight takes the mound tonight for the Mets. Whenever he pitches at home, it turns into a spectacle, which has to be great if you are a Mets’ fan. Harvey has been dominant this season with a 3.01 SIERA and a K/9 of 9.2. Harvey was knocked around in his last start, but should be able to bounce back tonight at home. He draws a terrific matchup against the Marlins, who are ranked 25th in wOBA (.293) an 19th in strikeout rate (20.4%) against right-handed pitching this season.

Analysis: Duda hit not one, but two home runs in Wednesday’s win over the Phillies. His power numbers may not be what they were last season, but he’s slowly starting to turn it around. He has a .344 wOBA and a .154 ISO against right-handed pitching this year. He draws a favorable matchup against the fly-ball pitcher, Dan Haren, who has given up at least 1.3 home runs per nine innings in each of the last four seasons.
