MLB Grind Down: Monday, May 11th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Pitcher Grind Down
Gerrit Cole (FanDuel: $9000, DraftKings: $8900)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 2.68 — K Rate: 26.9% — K/9: 9.84 — BB Rate: 6.9% — GB Rate: 59.6%
2014: SIERA: 3.23 — K Rate: 24.2% — K/9: 9.00 — BB Rate: 7.0% — GB Rate: 49.2%
Philadelphia Phillies vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.258 (Rank: 30)
Strikeout Rate: 20.0% (Rank: 16)
Analysis: Cole will be looking to bounce back after a subpar outing by his standards. He gave up eight hits and three earned runs in only five innings pitched against the Reds. He has the perfect matchup for a bounce-back outing tonight, as he faces a Phillies’ offense that owns the worst wOBA (.258) against right-handed pitching this season. Cole provides great strikeout potential and he should see plenty of run support with Jerome Williams on the mound for the Phillies.
Pitcher Rating:92.1
Jerome Williams (FD: $5800, DK: $4300)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.53 — K Rate: 13.4% — K/9: 5.45 — BB Rate: 4.7% — GB Rate: 37.8%
2014: SIERA: 4.03 — K Rate: 16.5% — K/9: 6.42 — BB Rate: 7.2% — GB Rate: 44.6%
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.287 (Rank: 27)
Strikeout Rate: 19.7% (Rank: 14)
Analysis: Williams has not pitched well this season, posting a 4.53 SIERA with a K/9 of only 5.5. He hasn’t walked a ton of batters, but that doesn’t help when his opponents are knocking him around each and every start. He draws a favorable matchup against the Pirates on paper, but Pittsburgh’s offense is much better than their 27th-ranked wOBA against right-handed pitching would suggest.

2014 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.415 — ISO: 0.225 — OBP: 0.415
Analysis: McCutchen has not had the start to the season that he was hoping for, but he is slowly turning it around. He has eight hits in his last five games, four of which went for extra bases. He has been extremely unlucky at the plate with a .271 BABIP. To give a comparison of how unlucky he has been, his BABIP has been above .350 in each of the last three seasons. Take advantage of his depressed price point tonight on FanDuel.

Marco Estrada (FD: $6200, DK: $5300)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 3.53 — K Rate: 22.2% — K/9: 8.22 — BB Rate: 7.9% — GB Rate: 41.9%
2014: SIERA: 3.90 — K Rate: 20.4% — K/9: 7.59 — BB Rate: 7.1% — GB Rate: 32.7%
Baltimore Orioles vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.340 (Rank: 2)
Strikeout Rate: 24.2% (Rank: 28)
Analysis: Estrada’s numbers so far this season may look enticing, but they don’t tell the entire story. He has only made two starts this year with his highest pitch count being only 79 pitches. Most of his work this season has been out of the bullpen. He will likely be on a pitch count tonight against the Orioles, who currently have the second-highest wOBA (.340) against right-handed pitching. There is some strikeout potential here, but the risk greatly outweighs the potential reward.
Pitcher Rating:43.7
Ubaldo Jimenez (FD: $6800, DK: $6100)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 3.55 — K Rate: 22.1% — K/9: 7.76 — BB Rate: 9.6% — GB Rate: 62.3%

Toronto Blue Jays vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.325 (Rank: 7)
Strikeout Rate: 20.5% (Rank: 20)
Analysis: Jimenez has pitched better than most of us could have expected him to, but he’s still that inconsistent pitcher that we have come to know over the last few years. He has had two very good starts, two subpar starts, and a rain-shortened start. It’s always a roll of the dice with Jimenez, as he can lose his command at the drop of a hat. He does provide decent strikeout potential, but he’s a deep tournament option at best tonight against the Blue Jays. Toronto currently has the seventh-highest wOBA (.325) against right-handed pitching.
Pitcher Rating:56.7

Position Eligibility: FD: 2B — DK: 2B
2015 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.387 — ISO: 0.207 — OBP: 0.378
Analysis: Travis continues his stellar rookie season tonight against Ubaldo Jimenez, who he has actually already faced five times this season. Travis is batting .288 on the season with a .387 wOBA against right-handed pitching. He has more power than most leadoff hitters and he also has more power behind him in the lineup than most leadoff hitters. He remains one of the top second base options on DraftKings at a price of only $3,300.

Analysis: After a torrid pace to open the season, Jones has cooled off of a bit in recent weeks. He still owns a .381 wOBA and a .167 ISO against right-handed pitching though. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against Marco Estrada, who has given up a .342 wOBA to right-handed hitters since the start of 2014. Jones also has the benefit of playing at home in the hitter-friendly Camden Yards, where he posted a .352 wOBA last season.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.315 (Rank: 16)
Strikeout Rate: 23.8% (Rank: 27)
Analysis: There have been times in each of Sabathia’s six starts where he has looked like the Sabathia of old. His velocity is up this season (up to 93 MPH on his fastball) and the separation between his fastball and off-speed pitches continues to widen. He just can’t seem to put together a complete game. Now, I’m not saying that you should target him in any cash game lineups, but he actually makes a very interesting tournament play tonight against the Rays. Tampa Bay is ranked 16th in wOBA against left-handed pitching and they have struck out at the fourth-highest rate (23.8%) against southpaws.
Pitcher Rating:67.7
Alex Colome (FD: $6100, DK: $6700)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 2.18 — K Rate: 26.3% — K/9: 9 — BB Rate: 0.0% — GB Rate: 46.4%

New York Yankees vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.322 (Rank: 9)
Strikeout Rate: 18.9% (Rank: 10)
Analysis: Colome has been sharp in each of his first two starts this season, but he has yet to throw more than 79 pitches. The Rays will likely stretch him out a bit further tonight (possibly up to 90 pitches), but the pitch count still limits his upside. He draws a difficult matchup against the Yankees, who are ranked in the top-ten in both wOBA and strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. If I’m using any pitcher tonight in the Yankees/Rays game, I’m targeting CC Sabathia.

Analysis: Even though I like CC Sabathia as a tournament play, it doesn’t mean that I’m completely avoiding hitters against him. All of the right-handed bats from the Rays are in play tonight, as Sabathia has given up a .394 wOBA to right-handed hitters since the start of 2014. Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 3.92 — K Rate: 20.7% — K/9: 7.34 — BB Rate: 8.7% — GB Rate: 48.5%
2014: SIERA: 4.60 — K Rate: 16.6% — K/9: 6.25 — BB Rate: 9.6% — GB Rate: 39.9%
Cincinnati Reds vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.307 (Rank: 20)
Strikeout Rate: 20.0% (Rank: 16)
Analysis: Miller is a big name in daily fantasy baseball, but looking strictly at the numbers, he doesn’t warrant the hefty price tag attached to him. Through his first six starts, he has posed a mediocre SIERA of 3.92 with a mediocre K/9 of 7.3. He walks a lot of batters and he has only thrown more than 100 pitches one time this season. He draws a decent matchup against the Reds, but he has to face them in the hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark. There are better options at and even below his price point tonight.
Pitcher Rating:55.4
Mike Leake (FD: $7600, DK: $8000)
Pitching Stats:

Atlanta Braves vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.318 (Rank: 12)
Strikeout Rate: 15.6% (Rank: 1)
Analysis: Leake has very similar numbers to Shelby Miller this season, although he walks fewer batters and averages almost ten more pitches per start than Miller does. Leake is a small favorite tonight against the Braves, who continue to outperform offensively. Atlanta is ranked 12th in wOBA against right-handed pitching and they have struck out at the lowest rate (15.6%) of any team against righties this season. The strikeout potential is limited with Leake tonight, making him an average fantasy option in both cash games and tournaments.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.295 (Rank: 25)
Strikeout Rate: 22.3% (Rank: 26)
Analysis: After picking up Samardzija in the offseason, this wasn’t the start that the White Sox had in mind. Both Chris Sale and Samardzija have struggled out of the gates. Through his first six starts, Samardzija has posted a 4.05 SIERA with a K/9 of only 6.7. His strikeout numbers have been down ever since being traded from the National League (Cubs) last season. He draws a favorable matchup tonight though, as the Brewers are ranked 25th in wOBA and 26th in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season.

Chicago White Sox vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.316 (Rank: 13)
Strikeout Rate: 18.7% (Rank: 9)
Analysis: Peralta has not pitched well this season, posting a 4.13 SIERA with a K/9 of 5.5. His walks are down, but that’s really the only improvement in his numbers from last season. He isn’t striking out enough batters to justify his $7k price tag on either FanDuel or DraftKings. He draws a difficult matchup tonight against the White Sox, who are ranked above the league average in wOBA and strikeout rate against right-handed pitching. Peralta can safely be avoided tonight in the hitter-friendly Miller Park.

The splits favor the left-handed hitters in this lineup, as Peralta has given up a .367 wOBA to batters from the left side of the plate since the start of last season. Cabrera is very affordable (especially on FanDuel) and he gets a small ballpark boost playing in the hitter-friendly Miller Park.
